I have experienced that if I suddenly drop from the game I loose my profile settings as well (BF2 occasionally drops to the desktop). Then my graphic settings will be all screwed up but also my controls. I'm just wondering if you can loose some of your settings after a crash but not all.

I have tested BF2 graphic settings to see what effect they have on performance and it seemes that most settings when cranked all the way up will give even the best cards something to chew on. I doubt that a 128MB 6600GT have the power to run this beast of a game at full settings. My starting point when testing performance drops from graphic settings is always 99FPS. I usually play with FPS in the range of 75 -99.

Maybe in BF2 when you change settings you don't get all of them until the shader optimation process. That could explain why the game looked better but without any clear performance drop because a couple of key settings was already in effect but not all. As far as I know the 2 most important settings to get the quality you describe is texture quality and texture filtering. 6x AA will both dull the image clarity and take a heavy toll on the gfx card btw.
