BF2 on a LOW END Laptop

heres my rig:


IBM R51
P M 1.6ghz
512 ram
ati radeon mobility 9000 (32mb)

yes i know my vid card blows, however I can get into the game. Well, the account menu atleast. After that, I can type for like a few seconds... after which the game freezes up. I have read on the net how there are people who have gotten the game to work with my ****ty card and the exact same specs as me so any advice ? The game loads, but after a while trying to create my user account, I freeze. I have the latest drivers from IBM. I have tried the latest Omega 5.8 based drivers.. even worse than the IBM provided ones.

I can't see how it's even possible for BF2 to run on that machine. I don't mean to offend, and don't take it that way. I just don't see it as possible at all. You can try a search for that model card, but I think you may be fubar.

Hey i have a laptop with that card in it and it runs bf2 online and singleplayer with no probs altho i do have a 3ghz processor nearly.


I reckon its your processor that is letting you down...not the graphics card.

I as well have installed BF2 on a Dell D600 with the 32mb ATI card and 1GB of Ram. You can play it with everything on low and at 800x600 (it has a black box all the way around it from the resolution being so low, but if your hooked up to a monitor all is well) Only problem I had was the laptop would overheat and lock up, but if you keep it elevated and air flowing underneath it i could play all day at work on it. Doesnt look pretty but it's playable.

edit: I agree with the above poster. It is more than likely your processor. The D600 has a pentium mobile vs the R51's celeron. Try upgrading to a Gig of Ram as well

Fortunately, I have a high-end Dell 9300 I bought about two months ago, but I'm 50% sure it's the drivers you used. Try googling radeon mobile 9000 bf2. I think they said they had to use outdated drivers, or one's optimized specifically for that card (mobile versions). The Catalysts might be the reason it's freezing up after the account menu.

Upgrading your RAM probably wouldn't help since the card is the reason it's blacking out. That Celeron is horrible by the way...which could be another reason. Keep fooling around with it, you'll get it to work some time.
