"There is a problem with your connection" - any ideas???

Just thought i should update this as it now seems to be working. The bad news is that i've no idea why. I spent some time on it yesterday, changing one thing, testing it, changing another, testing etc.

But it just started working later on.

There are some excellent posts on this site with things to try, so thought I'd summarise what I did in case some or all of it works for other people.

- Use Smart Close before running
- Launch via a batch file to sort out the memory priority

- Run adaware and do a full virus scan
- Delete contents of cache folder
- Update PunkBuster before playing
- Disable the firewall, see if that helps. If it does, double check your port config
- Updated all drivers


I'm a bit annoyed that I don't have a definitive answer, but the main thing is that its working. If anyone else is tearing their hair out, hopefully they'll get lucky too.

Just wondering if there's any way to find out what's actually causing connection problems? Yesterday things were fine, not a single lost connection. Today, 2 out of 3 connection attempts fail and its so frustrating because it takes so long to load things up before it fails.

There's nothing running in the background on my PC or using the internet connection.

Where can I start to troubleshoot it?

Firewall? Antivirus?

Internet connection? Cable\DSL\etc

Connection speed?

Have you tried different servers?

I've used smart close to ensure there's nothing running in the background before starting and also created the batchfile to sort out the memory issues.

"1Mb" connection speed over DSL

Doesn't seem to make a difference what server I target or port number, port #1 might work once then not work the next time so I'm assuming its now firewall related

Before playing I give the machine a reboot

I've been looking at the search facility which has lead me to try some of the above, but the problem seems to be that when a forum is this popular, the hits you get back on a search like that returns hundreds and hundreds of posts.

Just wondering if there's anything else obvious to try or do i just accept the online code is a bit buggy? Or is it me!

You say "it takes so long to load things up before it fails" it could be this...... cache files there should be around 600 ish in the file any more then do the stuff below. http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16424

Lower your pings by unloading the cache files.. (worked for me, after, i installed the patch).
Before uninstalling cache files 6 times normal ping, i got normal pings again after deleting cache files


Start > My Documents > Battlefield 2 file > mods file > bf2 > cache > any files that look like {D7B7E2-080C-11F-C7-3AC2CB} ( or something like that ) open it/them and delete all that is inside.


You can also delete files that retain the servers logos sigs and info kept on your pc
Start > My Documents > Battlefield 2 file > LogoCache > delete any and all files in LogoCache.


You do not need these files the game will replace them as settings etc change, it runs just dandy for me without them.

But do it at your own risk (OK)

its a BF2 problem, i can stay connected for hours with no problem playing CS or DC.

I posted this same thing in another thread, but I dont suppose you bought a new Dual-Core Processor? I was having a problem where everytime I joined a server, I could get as far as choosing my weapons before being disconnected. I found that by setting the Affinity on bf2.exe to only one core it solved my problem.

Thanks, but nope, its a system which has worked flawlessley for months and months, so all fingers are pointing to BF2 at the moment.

Is there an email address for EA Tech Support which actually gets you through to a real person?

I have to laugh, otherwise I'll cry.

This is one of the best games (most atmospheric and amazing sense of scale) I've ever played in my 25+ years of gaming but I can't play it enough because of techy hassles. So its now the most frustrating game ever.
