Graphics glitch making game unplayable

Can anyone help me with this. I bought the game yesterday so i'm a noob, be gentle with me.

It happened on 2 of the maps so far, the one with the dam and the huge pipes (cant remember the map names, sorry) it happens around the large crane, and also just happened on one of the US v Chinese maps (pictured)



It seems to be loads of black/very dark shapes extending from the crosshair, it's often worse than in the picture too. It goes away if I look in a different direction, but comes back if I look at that particular spot again.

My system:

P4 3Ghz
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe MB
1GB RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro
2mb down/256k up net connection

All using latest drivers (as of yesterday) and 1.02 patch and I even did a complete reinstall of windows xp before installing BF2.

I Can think of 2 possibilites
corrputed files - try re-install
system overheating - typical cause for graphics isues

Also try reinstalling the latest video drivers.

I've reinstalled the game multiple times, including installing XP completely in between, I've also removed then reinstalled the latest drivers, none of which worked.

I'm also getting blue-screen crashes every time I play (about 30-60 mins in) too.

I also thought it my be heat so I took the side off my case, aimed a desktop fan in and put in an extra 2 exhaust fans, no difference, and also I can play other games fine. Will install MBB to double check, but i don't think it';s that.

In almost every case of crashing i've seen, the player has had an ati card, maybe it's time I donate the 9800 to my girlfriend and swap to a Nvidea...

Hey man, Im having the exact same problem except i dont get a blue screen crash after 30-60mins, But i am using an NVidia GeForce 6600 GT, i have looked all over for solutions to this but havent found anything yet so maybe switching to Nvidia wont solve your problem, jsut to let you knoew before you spend lots of money. Sorry ><
PS. i also reinstalled my latest Nvidia drivers released 7th febuary 2006 and reinstalled the game, no difference some one help us please But im on the newest 1.2 patch

Nvidia support sucks like no other.

Its like a team of guys sat down and said "whats the best way to make it look like we have a reputable company website, but make sure nobody can ever contact us.


Before you buy Nvidia. Go to the Nvidia website and look like you are trying to resolve a problem. There is absolutely no way to contact these pricks.

There is an option for submitting a support ticket with your username and password. But if you ever forget that you are still screwed. There is no way to ask them to send you your username. There is an option for getting your password sent to you. But only if you already know your username. If not, it sucks to be you. LOL

I seem to recall in the early days of the games release that some players were having this issue when they had forced AA and/or AF loaded from the video driver control panel. BF2 needs to set these features its self so if they are enabled inside the ATI CCC or the nVidia Display Options, try disabeling them.

Otherwise, it looks like a heat issue (but its not) which can also be caused by out of date motherboard chipset drivers running under newer video drivers.

Man this is an old thread lol.

For those still experiencing this it was an issue with the drivers, updating to 5.5 fixed it completely, however the newest drivers reintroduce the issue as well as cutting my frame rate by 1/3!!

try this I posted this in another topic. If it doesnt work just set it back. Sorry if its weird to read remember the first couple of lines were addresssed to a different post.

K i had a problem similar to this is started with the mouse disappearing in the game. Then Later on my screen would blink black while iM playing and do it a few more times then shut down. MY fix was to go to desktop. right click. then click properties/ settings/advanced/troubleshoot. THen move the slider bar two slots left. clcik apply or ok and try. Sorry if this doesnt work.

hey kingskin you say updating drivers to 5.5 is that for the ATI ? im on Nvidia do you know which drivers i can get for Nvidia which will resolve my problem?. I did try the ones on the CD and i also turned off my shadows and the game lastest a good two hours but then it began to start again black lines appearing from gun but only very thin, nothing like before. I am just going to try what SHADOW suggested see if that helps. Ty peeps, sorry for bringing such and old thread back up :s. i've not played BF2 in a while because of the continuous problems i've had ><. oh one more thing can someone tell me what AA and AF are, mentioned by Shamus please, im a bit of a computer noob i just know how to get around minor problems :o(

Sorry I don't use an nVidea card so I couldn't recommend drivers, but your best bet is to try the latest ones downloaded from the nVidea website.

To answer your other questions, AA (Anti Aliasing) is used to smooth the edges of objects so they appear smooth and not jagged. You can use it in various 'strengths', such as 2x, 4x 8x etch, however it has a large effect on performance, increasing as you increase the strength of the AA. Unless you have a good card I'd stick to 2x or leave it off.

AF (Antroscopic Filtering) is used to make textures appear sharp as they fade into the distance rather than blurring. Again, you can use it in various strengths, and again it affects performance, although not as much as AA.

It's not the new patch, if you care to look at the date of this thread you'll see it was started WELL before patch 1.2 was released.
