I recently upgraded my system memory from 512 MB RAM to 2 GB RAM. The time it took for "verifying client data" went from ~90 seconds down to ~20 seconds. I was already curious about what BF2 is doing to prevent cheating, but now that it appears that it has something to do with the amount of system memory, I have to know. Anyone have an idea?

Re: Verifying Client Data Time vs. System RAM
No thats not the reason. Textures are loaded into memory, when you run out of memory it uses something known as virtual memory. VM (virtual memory) is just a file on your hard drive thats constantly being written to (A.K.A Swapping). When PB verify's the files if you have everything loaded to memory it will be quicker because it doesn't have to scan the VM. But since you had 512 MB stuff was being loaded into the VM, which PB had to scan.Originally posted by SnuFFehWell I imagine its checking your loaded files for modifications.
Punkbuster on your computer most likely does this, so the more RAM, the faster it does it.
Since VM is considerably slower than standard non DDR memory, you get a long waiting time.Comment

Re: Verifying Client Data Time vs. System RAM
I think that if you have a fast HD that it cuts the time down. I have 2 gigs of ram, (all identical 512 sticks) my verifying client data takes very long. I have a very poor HD its a IDE its awful. So if you have a raptor or a new I-RAM it will cut these times down dramamticly.Comment

Re: Verifying Client Data Time vs. System RAM
The 'Verifying Client Data' at the end of a map load has nothing to do with PunkBuster, that is the server doing it's 'Pure Mode' check. Go into any server not running in 'Pure Mode' and you will notice that you don't have to go through the 'Verifying Client Data' stage. Have fun finding a server not running it though, it will be server that is missing the right-most icon thingy if I recall properly.Originally posted by karen_mcdougalI recently upgraded my system memory from 512 MB RAM to 2 GB RAM. The 'Pure Mode' (verifying client data) is there to make sure nobody is manually editing **** in the game, like textures and other client side attributes. Only problem with it, is they check alot of **** that does not need to be checked, like the intro movies for example.
PunkBuster only checks what is loaded into memory, I was told this by someone from PunkBuster. I had a nice long dialogue with him cuz I help run a gaming league.Comment

Re: Verifying Client Data Time vs. System RAM
Verifying takes just over a minute for me, I have 512MB, DIMM 3200-400 or something like that. WinXP Athlon 2100+, 7200RPM IDE HD. Whole load process is just over 2 minutes.
The one thing I really miss from Guild Wars is the super-fast load times (and the frequent superfast updates)...Comment

Re: Verifying Client Data Time vs. System RAM
I just upgraded from 512mb to 1 gb ddr ram
made a hell of a difference, not just in verifying time (30 sec vs 45+s) but the game runs so smoothly, no stutter ever.
About bloody time I was always thinking it was lag, after all I have a 6800GT, but nope, the extra ram makes all the difference
(oh and I also put in a new sata drive, and took bf2 off my old ide drive onto that)Comment
