Final Answer to the Bullet Drop Question and Several Others.

    PLEASE READ THIS.
This is the Final Answer to Everything

I have been coding for the Battlefield series ever since the Battlefield 1942 demo. The engine has remained the same ever since Battlefield 1942. There have only been additions and re-organisations of code. For example, everything is now in .tweak files instead of 5 separate .con files.

    1. There IS bullet travel time.

Bullet travel time has been in place for all weapons ever since Battlefield 1942. Contrary to popular belief, this is coded into the game. Each bullet has it's own set speed. Some go faster than others. People however are right that latency is an issue. Depending on your latency, you may have to lead more than usual, but there is always bullet travel time no matter what. You can test this yourself in singleplayer where there is no lag time at all.

    2. There IS bullet drop.

Bullets actually do drop. They are not specified a gravity modifier, which gives them the default value of 1. Remember however that while there is bullet drop, it only happens at extreme ranges. As you can see from the tests below, bullet drop occurs in all weapons not specified otherwise. For example the M4 Carbine does not have any gravity information, which means that it is given the default value of 1. However remember that drop is not noticeable unless it is at extreme ranges, and most weapons do not even have the range for it to become evident.

For more information see my next post

    3. Bullets always fly straight.

While this is a minor point, I figured I may as well correct this while I am at it. Deviation means that the bullet will come out of the barrel in different position from the barrel. I agree that this is a silly way to simulate bullet deviation, but that is how it is done and you cannot change it.

I realize that this is a little hard to understand but let me put it in a simple, exagherated form that you can see.

More information on the bullet drop

In these tests I was aiming at a small rock waaaaay in the background (not the one you can see, a smaller one next to it).

Test 1: M95 at extreme range.

    Video: http://media.putfile.com/droptest01

Result: All shots showed up about 3-5 meters below the rock.

    Test 2: KORD 12.7mm Machinegun

    Video: http://media.putfile.com/droptest02

Result: Same target, same distance. Again the shots land about 3-5 meters below the rock.

    Test 3: WZ551 25mm Cannon

    Video: http://media.putfile.com/droptest03

Result: Same as the M95, shots landed 3-5 meters below target area.

Your graphic representing the way shots leave the weapon is wrong. If this was how it was done then a submachine gun would have the same accuracy at 100 meters as it has in 1 meter.

The shots leave the weapon from the same point going out at a slight angle which means the spread will increase with distance. Look at the screenshot:

I spent an evening with my clan friends on our unranked server testing out the sniper rifles. I tested the chinese, the M24 and the M95 at their maximum effective range. By maximum range I mean that the player would simply dissapear if he went further back. At these ranges the player almost dissapears inside the crosshair. This screenshot gives an indication of the M24 range (Edit: About 350 meters) (look for the blue tag on the hill). I went further back with the M95 (Edit: About 400 meter).

At this range with the M24 I scored a consistent 4-5 hits out of 5 shots aiming at the upper body/head. If I went above the head with the crosshair (with a distance of approximately an extra head) I would miss all 5 shots. Look at the screenshot:

The M95 is slightly less accurate and the scope is 1 pixel thicker but I was still able to obtain an accuracy of about 3-4 out of 5 shots aiming at approximately the same spot as the M24. When firing at someone prone (they are about 3 pixels high at this range I used the under side of the center crosshair. Firing above target gave the same results as the M24. M95 screenshot:

I wasn't able to get many headshots at this range (about 1 in 12) but got fairly consistent upper body hits with only 2 boxes left in the damage meter. After learning the extreme accuracy of the snipers I'm confident DICE made the right decision about damage. If you got 100% damage for an upper body shot a sniper would probably get 4 kills in 5 rounds on stationary targets. As for bullet drop I think my findings speak for themselves.

After assertaining the snipers accuracy I asked my friend to fire the M24 above my head so I could see where the decal appeared. He fired at an upward angle about a head height above me. Look at the screenshot:

In my opinion the only thing Why's videos prove is that the decals are way off at that range. Server confirmed hits show a different picture.

I have no clue what you said Wasp. All I could understand is the deviation in the beggining.

Someone made a video on m95 at 400 meters, and there was bullet drop. He aimed above the person and got the kill.

I didn't see that video, but how can you be sure it was bullet drop and not just regular deviation?

Decal = the smoke puff when a bullet hits. I fired an M95 at a target where I got immediate confirmation of the hit/amount of damage and looked for consistency. When I fired above the head of my friend at that range I would usually miss. When I fired approximately at the level of his head I would score 3 or 4 hits out of 5 shots. I rechecked distances and edited the post.

shut up with all the ass babble theoretics tryin to prove there is no bullet drop... there is a definite noticeable bullet drop, WASP your test f****** sucks, it has been proven time and time again that there is bullet drop not to mention i always gotta aim about a pixel above the dudes head at longer ranges to get the headshot (with the M24, only sniper gun i'll use), whereas if i aim straight for the head i get a body shot... the game has bullet drop no question about it enough of the ass whistlin already

Why don't you spend 5 minutes reading up on how a game actually works before you open your fn mouth and think a little about how much a bullet drop of 3 to 5 METERS in 500 meters would affect your M24 shots.

For now, bullet drop is the Loch Ness Monster of BF2. It only seems to happen to believers.

Or Bam23 it happens to people that shoot long distance, its a little more then obvious its there.

In BF2, putting too much focus into a long distance target will more than likely get you killed when some guy turns the corner and sees you popping off one shot every 5 seconds :P.
