Lock on & TV Missle in Jet ?????

Hi All,
I have tried the co-pilot on the jet about 8 times now and am able to get a “locked on” message, I fire my rocket, it seems to head towards the target but veers off almost every time. What gives?

1 - Am I in control of that missile to some extent?
2 - Do I need to SEE the target until the missile hits the intended target?
3 – Do I need to parachute and ride the dam thing down to the target? Yippee Kay aye MF

Locked on should mean locked on, fire and forget IMHO

What am I doing wrong here?

And before I get a cranky response, I DID DO A SEARCH of the forum, but the answer was not clear.

It many times wants to take a different heat source, which makes no sense since it is laser guided....either way, it gets VERY glitchy sometimes.

locked on means nothing in this game...
basicly its not "fire and forget"
its "fire and prey"

the TV missile you need to "guide" it yourself untill you get to the target...
all the way untill impact...

I think you have to keep holding down the left mouse button after firing and guide the thing into the target with your mouse using the crosshairs.

In the gunner position of the jet, I just randomly fire off missiles when approaching an enemy base, and almost always get a kill, whether I get the lock on or not is unimportant, just fire away, it doesn't seem to hit friendly targets either which is amazing. Now in a heli, you can easily guide the TV missile where you want it.

The trick with the TV guided missle is you need to keep clicking the button to get it to aim in that direction. It's not like the SRAW and that where you just fire and it follows you crosshair.

yeah, i think the tv in the jets is diff. than the helos..

once it has a lock (and it WILL lock on friendlies) you fire away...

The key to using this weapon is a smart pilot -- any pilot hammering thrust the whole time will put u in a position to lock on nothing and miss what you do shoot at... One of our better pilots picked up his crew svc. ribbon flying the F18 at a reduced speed and letting the co-pilot have a field day.... get someone to fly slow and you'll tv the daylights out of things..

the 'TV' missile in the jets is indeed different (though I have never had it try to lock a friendly). After you fire it goes in the *general* direction of wherever you locked it, but you need to keep your crosshairs over the target to get it to actually go (maybe just inside the larger 'locked on' ring instead of right on the tank/apc/whatever, but you definately have to be close) or it *will* veer off towards the laser. Also, unless you're really far from your target, don't bother firing if the pilot is banking at all, the things turn like pigs.

You *can* manually steer them, without a lock, but it isn't as easy/accurate as a TV missile. Just point the laser, fire, and hope the missile turns in time to get where you want it to go (I've tried taking BHs and stuff out like this, pretty hard but I did manage one kill. Again, the fact that the missile starts WAY off to the side and has to arc inwards makes it hard, with the TV missiles on the choppers they're pretty close in).

You see, im really confused now. Ive never had problems with the LG missiles on jets. It NEVER locks on to enemies, though it does highlight them the same as enemies are highlighted.

When I do get a lock, provided the jet is well before of the vehicle, it will hit and kill it. If the pilot is flying PAST the vehicle, the missile will fire, but not be able to turn back on the jet. You see what I mean? When you fire it while going parallel to an enemy, the missile has to fire forward a little bit before it turns, (Imagine if it didnt, Plane = BOOM + You[Teamkilled]Bob) so obviously it cant turn 180 and head back away from the jet to reach the vehicle.

The laser guided will not lock on to friendlies, unless you fire it without a lock on. They will show up as a sqaure or circle on ur screen, but will not lock. Unless you decide to shoot one anyway without a lock. I've used it plenty of times and rarely have locked on to friendlies.

It can still get knocked off target if you jerk the designator around I've noticed, I had one nice slip-up where I fired off a missile but the pilot had to make a sudden bank and I went off target... so the missile flew over the tank I was shooting at and caught the gunner of a friendly tank right in the face (didn't kill the tank, didn't even get 'team vehicle damage', just blew the guy right out of the turret... was actually rather funny execpting the insta-punish...).

There is a bug with the chinese and MEC jets that makes the missile lose the target shortly after firing. For those jets, it seems that shooting blindly and dumb luck is the way to get kills,

I hate a bug that sometimes come.

When you fire in the TV mode, nothing happens, when you fire in the look around mode the missiles fire.

When you lock on someone, shoot, the missiles just fire straight away 3- or 9'o clock....
