Specific System Question (RAM/VIDCARD)

Ok, I did a search and couldnt find exactly what I was looking for. Plz dont flame me for posting up a thread when there are "other threads" like it.. this one is very specific. The reason im doing this is because I have been having a few problems with system lag (I usually have an 80-150 ping which is OK for a ping). I think its my ram... but I want to hear if you have any of the same problems as me.

5 questions, 5 simple answers plz.
1. What processor do you have
2. How much ram do you have and if its "highend" (like overclocked and loaded to bear with heatsyncs) or "midrange" (normal plain-jane ram).
3. What videocard do you have
4. ABOUT what settings do you run it at (dont list off everything, just say "mostly high" or "all high except for bla bla bla.)
5. Do you get any graphics/system lag and when?

ME:
1. AMD +3000 Winchester Core
2. 1 gig (2x512mb Corsair Value Ram).
3. ATi x700Pro 256mb AGP.
4. Everything at medium with the drawdistance at 100% and dynamic shadows off. NO AAx.
5. I get some SERIOUS lag at the beginning.. sometime it even locks up my system. It makes it so I cant do ANYTHING, and I get this screeching noise. At first I thought it was a soundcard issue, but I have an Audigy 2 card with updated drivers so it shouldnt be doing it. I think its due to my lack of ram. My roomate is running a lower system (P4 2.1ghz, 1.5gigs ram BUT has a 9600xt and onboard audio) and his game runs VERY nicely at medium/high settings.. I think it might be my lack of ram..

borrow your roommates ram briefly and see if that sorts the problem

your ram causes the lag. the screeching could just be a sound loop from the lag but its unlikely that would happen everytime. you dont mention what your soundcard is so i assume you're running onboard sound? what are your sound settings ingame?

i had the same system as you except i had X800pro instead pf the x700pro. i got the bad lag at the start but no screeching. i have sound set on medium, software, no eax.

Its strange you'd be having problems with your system....

Thanks, I tried taking his ram out and it worked like a charm. I guess I will have to shell out another 100 for another gig of ram...

5. When I first join for a few seconds then nothing

Ping I only play on Uk servers normally and get 5-25 ping

So... you used YOURS AND HIS or JUST HIS RAM? Cause I have 1gig of 434Mhz DDRAM and I've got maybe a 2 second lag at the start of a map... when it's first loaded that is. I don't get it when it just restarts the map.

Specs as follows:

P4 2.8GHz HT @ 2.92Ghz
Asus P4C800 Mobo @ 800MHz FSB
1Gb Kingston HyperX 434Mhz DDRAM
eVGA GeForce FX 5900 Ultra 256Mb @ 475/900MHz (running 77.77 drivers)
Audigy 2 (running latest webupdate drivers)
1 Seagate Barracuda 120Gb SATA 150 HDD (8 gig system partition/112 data partition)
1 Western Digital 40Gb ATA 100 HDD (512Mb Pagefile)

BF2 - 1024x768 and was able to run the game with everything set on high except AA and AF those were set at low settings. Sometimes had a few stutters when screen had a lot of effects on so I followed some www.tweakguides.com tips for BF2 and set most settings to medium.

About to set some back to high because landscape is lookin' crappy at medium distances. Other than that everything is running fine. BUT... I leave my pc on all day while I'm at work, and when I get home and I start up BF2 without a fresh reboot, the game runs REALLY REALLY sluggish and sometimes I get a CTD after 2 maploads. If I reboot before I start the game, I can play for hours without a problem. I also disable my virus scanner before I start the game.

My specs:
Athlon XP 2200 (1.8GHz)
2x512 DDR333
GeForce 6600GT 128MB AGP
120GB 7200RPM SATA HD
SBLive! 5.1 soundcard


I run at 1024x768 on high settings with no AA and low AF. I don't have lag issues. Make sure you don't have a lot of programs or big programs running in the background. Also, when I first tried the demo, I had to run at medium/low settings. After a disk defrag the lag went away and I could turn it up to high.

Where does the screeching noise sound like it's coming from? Maybe a fan with warped bearings? Check on all your fans to be sure. Overheating could cause you to lag as well.

Interesting....when I had 512 (2x256) ram and upgraded to 1gig, I was running with 2X512 (pc23200 ddr2 (Dell)) with the crappy card (ATI x300 128 pci-e)...my stuttering pretty much disappeared. My settings were: med with low lighting texture filtering and low shadows settings with AAx2. FPS were low around the 20-30 range but it was playable.

I bought the x700 pro only to return it and pay the extra 80 bucks for the x800. Now I'm running with All on high, 1200x960 (i forget exact number) with AAx4. No lag, no stuttering.

From what I've heard, high-end ram won't improve the performance drastically. Moreover, if you buy more ram...someone told me if you have 4 slots, it's possible the mobo uses only 3 at a time, but you have to check with your manufacturer..and I can't confirm the validity of this point.

Are yous shutting down background programs as per the manual? I do this every time and noticed a huge difference when I had my X300. Lastly, I've optimized my paging files, selecting no page file, reboot, then optimized my page files as per tweakguides.com

Other than that, I'd bet it's your sound card...do you have the settings for hardware or software. Try lowering them to Low, no eax and putting the sound to software.

I'm using a headset and have a card that doesn't support EAX so my sound quality was low and on software.

Ok, heres an update.
I went out and dropped a few dollars and got a new videocard (ATi x850PRO). I dont have ANY studdering at all so I guess it was my ram/medium card that was the problem..

P.S. I run everything on high now (even my sound) and it still pulls about 60-75fps with no start-studder.

4.Resolution at 1280x968 i believe with all graphics maxed and AA at 4.
5.When I upgraded to 2 gigs of ram I never had any stuttering problems or lag again.
