Question to you skinners/texturerers out there

I'm trying to learn how to skin. Now I'm already proficient with photoshop so I don't need any advice or tutorials on that side of things. My main thing right now is UVW mapping.

When you go to UV map a model, what's the best way of going about it? (both prepping and actually getting it done) Would you have to split up, say, a gun into different basic parts, or would you just have the different pieces that will be animated being seperate parts?

Really all I've been able to find on the subject is just general skinning advice and tutorials and "use UV maps to skin" or "how to skin a UV map" stuff that doesn't help me at all.

Thanks to whoever helps me (since I know there's some good skinners that lurk totalbf2)

The editor forums have tutorials and other help - i dunno if you've already been there but it might help you anyway...
