You should download mine... but it's not done yet. No offence to all of the city maps out there... but they all seem to be missing a certain quality to it. I've worked so far over 50 hours on my map... I'm about 70-80% done. And it's AWSOME....

50 hours? i have spent 3 weeks, and at least 10 hours a day and even my map may still have mistakes. The main problem with the maps out there isnt the quality. The people who make the map don't test it enough. They test regular things, like the minimap, or the artillary, UAV, but there are are much more important little things. If you take a close look at all the maps that have been released so far, ALL of them will have a lot of trees inside of buildings, or undergrowth colliding with sandbags or sidewalks, or overlapping sidewalks, or floating objects, such as buildings, or missing textures, or improper commander map, or incomplete minimap and many others. I remember spending 1 entire week just fixing tiny bitty little plants (grass) colliding with buildings, or some little box even outside of the combat area and i am sure even in my map if you spend some time you will find errors. But that should be the way people approach the idea of map making. You can't just paint the terrian, put some flags, and buildings and spend 3 days and then release the map. because i assure you, you will find errors after you release your map and will have to change it and then release it again and this will happen at least 10 times, by the time you are done with your map, nobody will want to download it, the people who will have downloaded it will have different versions of it and etc etc.

The map making is not easy. IT looks easy but its definetly not. Of course if you don't wanna make a retard map with 200 tanks in it and just to play with your friends. If you wanna make professional maps, you will need at least 2 weeks of work making the map and then another month for testing the map. I wish i had more time for map making, i would make great maps, but i have a lot of priorities more important than bf2 now. Just a friendly advice for people who have just started map making or who have been spending countless hours for their 2nd or 3rd map.

The common mistakes i have been seeing in the maps:

Custom made minimaps, or edited minimaps. dont do it, it will look worse.

Trees...oh boy, i don't know how many maps have trees that one side of the tree is dark and the other side is the correct color. thats very bad. in your level settings tweak bar, there are 3 things start with "tree color" and dont you think they kind of look black? you might wanna change them:laugh:

Water. it either doesnt move or it moves so fast

Combat area. people either make the map 1024 size and make the combat area %10 of the map or they don't include combat area at all.

Surrounding terrain...when you go awol, you see that green endless texture? you gotta paint that!:)

Flag names. name them, they need meaningfull names, MEC_16_MAIN_BASE is not a flag name, they need meaningful names.

Spawn points. You need at least 20-30 spawn points for your map. Do you see in some maps there is only 1 flag left and the white dot turns red and you can't spawn? thats because there is not enough spawn points.

Undergrowth. painting the terrain with brush size 3 and then clicking generate all will not help you. not only will it not help you, but also it will delay your release date. you need to paint the terrain, put your buildings, flags, roads, and everything, AND undergrowth. so you know there wont be undergrowth in the buildings or under the tarmac road.

Overgrowth. Dont make overgrowth with 20 density. same thing with the overgrowth. make your map ready AND include overgrowth. A lot of buildings will have trees in them and its a huge pain to just to fix those errors.

Lightmaps. Oh boy..lightmaps need a lot of work. if you are not making a dark city map, don't touch lightmaps. 1. if you dont have enough hardware power, it will take you 10 hours just to compile your map. 2. it will make your map size 4 time as big, 3. after lightmap generation your buildings and cars and everything will look like dark boxes. 4. you will have to deal with that huge line in the middle of your map.

Hills, mountains...TERRAIN. there is a tool called "platform". well there is a reason why our friends at DICE put it there. whats wrong with all these people. you fall in the river, you gotta swim 2 miles just to find a place to get back on the ground. The hills and mountains look totally unrealistic, you need to make the edges much smoother. I don't know any hills or mountains in original BF2 maps look like a something as sharp as a knife.

I could make this list 10 times longer but i know nobody will care about these things, there is gonna be a map release in every 2 days and then another another. my point is, if you are making a map to play with your friends, say 2-3 guys, fine. but if you are making a map which you will release to public and expect hundreds of people to play it, obey these things, it will make your life and theirs easier and at the end you WILL get the credit....so...make a difference

The bottom part of your post is deffinetly helpful... but something doesn't make sense. You state you have worked 70 hours a week for three weeks, One week (70 hours) was spend fixing your plants, and you wish you had more time because you have other priorities more important then BF2? My god... you spend 10 hours a day mapping and you have more important things to do then map...

Here are some screenshots of my map so far. Remember that I am not done. I understand there is detail lacking in many of the screenshots. I AM NOT done yet.

Your sarcasm is noted... Your right.. let me rephrase... My map is looking 'ok'... you might want to download it.. you might not.. don't get excited over it... its just a bf2 map... no biggie...

Is that better A9_Seeg? I hope I have pleased you.

Also, you can't really say much from the screenshots. They don't have enough detail. But for one thing, i can say your trees are too bright for your map. Other than that, you have to (and if you had 2 or 3 more people to do this, that'd be great) go ahead and examine every single little inch square of your map. You gotta do this without getting bored, you need to be very patient. The one very annoying thing i can remember is, when fixing undergrowth or overgrowth (plants or trees colliding with other objects), if you delete some part of your overgrowth (or undergrowth), in somewhere else, and sometimes very very far away, another tree pops up in another building. It gets really really annoying and you start saying "oh well nothing is perfect" and you give up. You shouldn't. No matter how long it takes you, you shouldn't give up.

Another very annoying thing is roads. There isn't any intersection in bf2 editor that matches with any of the road textures. So there is really no way to make a proper intersection. So i suggest you that you use dirt roads instead of tarmac roads as much as you can because intersections in dirt roads don't look bad.

I know from myself, in software programming, you write a program in x time and it takes 10x time to test it. Making the map isn't so hard. Anyone with imagination and enough hardware can make the best map. However, making the map complete, bug free, and playable is hard, requires a lot of time, and patience.

I won't have tree's and bush pop up anywhere I don't want to. I didn't put the overgrowth/undergrowth in until after building placement.

I was only having a laugh. The map looks very good from I have seen.

Its just funny to see someone go "MY MAP IS THE BEST" Very high in confidence (I usually expect others to rate stuff, not the creator :d)
