Howdy all. Need some tips if you may help out.
I bought BF2 about a week ago as I just got a new PC for the first time in about 5 years. Now I've played plenty of PC/Console games all my life, (in fact I work for a video game publisher) but this is the first time I've played an online game.

It's been a bit of a bruise to my ego. I completely suck. My kill:Get Killed ratio is maybe 1:3 at best. I can't seem to sniper anyone for the life of me, and when I get into a fire fight, even if I get the jump on the person, I will normally lose even though I seem to be hitting them.

What's worse though is on most of the maps, I get worked over by jets/helicopters. I've tried my best to fly these with my mouse/keyboard but I just can't get it. I don't want to keep wasting them as that hurts whatever team I am on.

And then when I see someone, I can't tell right away which team they are on until the blue or red text appears, but often times when I wait for that they just shoot at me and take me out. Am I missing something?

I've played about 5 hrs online, and have around 120 points. So pathetic how slow I'm going, as I read if I can get to a thousand I can get a weapon upgrade.

So anyone have some pointers to help me out, from when you were a noob? What am I doing wrong as a sniper? And why the heck can't I fly a Heli/Jet? I read the manual, I know the controls... I just can't get it. And is there a way I can earn these points a little quicker while helping my team? I don't want to cheat, hate that crap, but I'd like to feel like I'm helping whichever team I'm on.

Honestly I can't believe I've been reduced to making a post for help, but I'm just overwhelmed with going against much better players apparently, and it's time to put my bruised ego aside. Anyone, tips? Please?

Your best bet would be to practice in single-player mode for a while. Start out on the easiest setting, then move it up as you feel you're getting better. Once you start to feel comfortable in your skills when set to the hardest setting, then you should start to venture into the online-play.

In heli do slooooow movement with your mouse. And dont panic. If you start swaying your mouse in panic to one side to another you'll be dead maaan.

Just learn, heck I sucked douple as much when I started playing BFV.

the best way to learn to fly a heli is to start a local server and practice on maps like Kubra and the power plant. Use the buildings as obstucles once you have learned basics and fly around. Its rather quick to learn and fun. Forget about planes without a joystick. I tried sniper briefly but found medic more appealing so cant give much advice there. As far as getting worked whenever you encounter someone, you need to realize that you are going up against people that have over 100+ hours invested in the game, dont expect to keep up. Join a squad, stick with them and learn as you go. My k/d ratio was horrible at the beggining and have started gaining back all that lost ground. Also, as a medic, support, engineer you'll be getting extra points for your bonus actions besides killing people. Healing, resupplying, and repairing all gets you a point so it will add up quicker.

you sound JUST like ME 2 months ago
now I am Cpl and actually feel confident I can make SGT soon
and ref KD ratio - I was the same about 1000 -more deaths than kills, now just last night I have 1000 more K than D - so be patient and it will get better
Overall guidelines -
Do NOT try to learn too many things at once
(eg jet helo, armor, etc)

pick one - preferably on the ground and take your time
do not RUN into battle, act as though the life you may loose is yours
join a clan to learn team play
there are many out here
read ths FORUM for ideas -
you will learn more by reading than by asking ( unless you have a specific question)
and my BEST suggestion - practice a bit with the single player mode
in the beginning of my play - single player ripped me, then I learned to shoot in headshots, shoot while moving, etc
now single player is too boring, even on expert

also - stick with a certain map for a while
the more you learn the stereets, hills, alleys, per map, the less overwhelmed you will be

I think I have about 200 hours of game play, and am still finding new ways to move around my favorite 2 maps, and am still lost on most of them!

One more point in reply to your problem tellingg who is an enemy. Learn your teams camo. Light or dark. Also use the radar alot, if you see a vehicle up ahead and it doesnt show up on your radar as green (squad member), blue (team member), or gray (empty), than shoot it. Same for players. It gets to me as habitual as looking at your rearview mirror while driving. Very useful and quick.

Hi m8, Firstly im not a very good player, i just have fun, so i'm not sure how much help i can be but to correct you slightly its probably not that they are "better" then you as such merley more experienced, at 5 hours online some people get that in one day seemingly :)

My biggest tip is to spend ages in the "tips and Tricks" forum, its easy to miss as its a sub-catagory to this general one so just in case look at the top (no offense meant if thats obvious) The "tips and tricks" forum has posts with well tested answers rather then questions and is a mine of useful information.

As for the friend or foe identifying, its all down to uniforms and at distance and faces when your close IMHO. Play single player for a bit, or even just look through all the "player kits" in the BFHQ and soon you will be able to identify not only thier side but also thier kit (therefore the weapon they will be shooting back with ) instantly and then you can always have the upper hand if you spot them first.

As for the flying, myself i play with mouse and keyboard and can hold my own in game, Its all personal preference of course but i use very high sensitivity and small movements as i find it easier, but however you play again i suggest the single player, Gulf of Oman ids the only SP map with planes (i think) so is a good start and the bots aren't as bad as you might expect (for practice only of course)

Lastly regarding points without cheating, well a hotly debated subject for sure, but being support or medic and throwing ammo bags and health packs around at choke points and flags dosent hurt anyone as long as thats not ALL you do :laugh:

Welcome as well...

For flying -

Helo - kb/mouse is just fine - play something like Clean Sweep in single player. Get used to take-off, land, and general flying in the BlackHawk. Once you have that down you can give the attack helos a shot

Jets - best bet is really a Joystick, period.

As far as the red/blue thing, thats just normal for the game. Look past waiting for the red/blue tag to come up, and get used to the skins. For the most part, they're fairly easy to distinguish. Also, another trick is to take a quick look up at the mini-map, where friendlies will be pointed out for u (great for when u are in a helo fixing to pwn a tank and then realize its a friendly lol).

But overall, I'd suggest pwning it up agaisnt the bots in single player for a while, it'll get you used to the style of play.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I'll continue to play exclusively on the single player for a while, and just get a feel for it that way. I'll just pass on the jets as I don't play with a joystick, but I'll work on the helis.
Also thanks for the tip about the different outfits vs going for red/blue. Hopefully that will help me out a bit on the reaction time.

Now I just need to practice my sniping skills, I think my problem is that I'm actually aiming directly at the person I'm shooting at, instead of above them, or leading them if they are running.

I look forward to playing with you all in the future, and actually helping the team out.

If anyone else has suggestions for a beginner, I'd love the help.

Theres a fair amount of "bullet drop" as well, again there are some pretty detailed threads in the "tips and tricks" forum as well as damage stats and everything else you could think of :) None of the snipers, not even the upgraded one is a one-shot kill except with head shots so the best sign of you hitting him is him sprinting away in panic, as its quite hard to tell untill the second hit lands sometimes.

I still dont agree that a joystick is needed for the jets, its all personal preference of course but i am a competant pilot with mouse and keyboard, sure i get shot down sometimes but can hold my own against most pilots and do not feel limited when dogfighting with the vulcan cannon, or any other times for that matter. I have a good joystick (bought specifically for this game when i got into flying) but have returnded my mouse/keyboard for the easier "mouselook" visibility and (for ME) extra control. I do of course admit to being in a minority, but dont rule it out completly, its not so clear cut that u *need* a joystick.

BTW you can never miss identify the chinese spec-ops, they have pretty red caps to make it easier for head shots

Ok, first off, to the thread starter, don't call yourself a noob, youarn't a noob, you're a newbie. IMO they are totally different, as well as how people use them, you are a newbie, a person that's new to the game, a noob is a person that does all the cheap tricks to get better stats, they BH whore bunnyhop, jump-prone etc. You are not one of them, at least not yet, anyways, you should go play on singleplayer, it'll help your aim, stuff like that, as well you need to get better at recognizing friend from foe. And don't fly a jet till yu get a joystick, and start learning from a local server you created. A good way to learn is to join a squad, and spawn on the squad leader, if he's good, you just stay behind him, you'll learn how it's done in BF2. I started off in BF1942 in single player, i did it on the easiest mode, i never upped the level, and then i just went into BF2 guns blazing (although i wasn't too good, i didn't like BF1942 online very much, just played SP on easiest until i got bored), you just gotta get the hang of it. It's all in a matter of time with singleplayer, i wish EA could have given a better singleplaer, at least a campaign like in BF1942, and download the demo eventualy you can do unlocks hack on it, you can see which one you want eventually, plus, it took me 20 hours to get my first unlock, i also sucked at first, on my first game online in a ranked server i was nervous, i didn't want to already hit negative points, i ended up getting about 4 kills and one tk, i got a flat score of zero. ANd then the second time i got 1 kill, 1 tk, got a score of -6. It'll snap to ya eventually.

You're playing sniper while trying to learn the game. It's good for sitting back and learning while you watch, but to actually get better you need to be where the fights are. Then it's just practice practice practice. After awhile you'll notice your reflexes will begin to get faster, blah blah blah.

I recommend not sniping. It's not a good way to get better at a game. You're new and you'll probably miss a few shots, blowing your position and get shot up while trying to load a new bullet.

its very hard coming from the playing FPS offline to online. I remember when that first happened to me many years ago, i got owned. Personally, if I were you, i wouldnt bother practicing offline cause you will be able to steamroll the bots, but this wont help online where human unpredictability becomes a factor. First off, stick with the urban maps to begin with (Karkland, Sharqi and Mashtuur City), and play assault (probably the best class to rack up points as a noob). As you play more and more, youll learn the ins and outs of the maps and different aspects of the game. dont worry to much about flying and what not, let other people fly vehicles and you get in passanger seats to get points (especially being an engineer in a blackhawk)

btw sniper is the most underpowered and useless class in the game

if you want to get better, create a SEPARATE/PRACTICE account and play sharqi peninsula everytime. that's the best urban map. mashtuur can be ruined by bh whores and karkand is for 'nade whores and n00b tube lovers. in sharqi, everything's balanced so you'll learn to identify who your enemies are (can sometimes tell by their uniforms), you'll learn how to shoot, etc.

also, pick a kit and learn to love it.

you'll RARELY get over 50 pts. as a sniper CONSISTENTLY (meaning round after round after round). play medic and you'll get over 50 easily. their gun is accurate, they have 'nades, you can throw medi packs everywhere for an easy pt and you can revive dead teammates for more easy points! and if you get in a chopper, you automatically heal teammates for, well, more easy points!
