    Crash to desktop, 6800GT

    specs
    Abit AI7
    Intel P4 Prescott 3.0Ghz
1GB Corsair Twinx ram (running in dual channel 2x512mb)
    Albatron 6800GT 256mb
Antec Truepower 480w PSU (runs 28a on 12v)

Ok, i just bought the albatron 6800GT and it runs BF2 beautifully, can run everything on high no problems. At first i noticed some stuttering which i fixed, the audio didnt like having eax on or being on hardware. So it all runs great. for about 10 minutes, then without warning, game just closes, crash to desktop. Occasionally a blue screen of death chucked in the mix. i have read several threads on several different forums on how to fix the problem but so far nothing has worked. ive tried several drivers and at the moment nforce 66.93 has lasted the longest (i got to play for 30 mins yay) however its completely random, sometimes i dont even get into a map before it crashes. have tried turning detail right now however crash still occurs, however somewhat more smoothly (on high the crash would loop sound then crash, and slowly go back to desktop, on medium/low it would just instally snap to desktop)
cpu/card/ram are getting PLENTLY of cooling. ive formatted and reinstalled, reinstalled and then reinstalled again, and the problem is still there, even in 1.0 so its definately not a 1.2 specific problem ? GRRR

i have no idea what the bloody problem is and its just ****ting me to tears! anybody got any advice on what to do? in reference to fast writes, there is no option in bios for me to turn it on/off (ive looked EVERYWHER in bios it aint there) however using riva tuner it says "defined by driver" and has off written next to it

also, this problem can be replicated in other games, one such being silent hunter 3 (but it lasts a little longer however)

Somebody please help ? im itching to play bf2 for longer then my 30 minute record - as it is an awesome game. I dont think a 1.3 patch will solve any problems for me as it happens in other games too, but mostly bf2...

    thanks for any support, cheers

    Re: Crash to desktop, 6800GT

The freezing / Lag / crashes can be attributed to "several things" .....Heat on CPU and vid card or both, lack of RAM and virtual memory being allocated (allowed to be used) to the game program, over filling of cache game file, memory dumps, bad file copying of program - punkbuster-patch, overloaded CPU, sound on MoBo and cards (as KingOfKhaos will add ) etc etc.

To find the fault do one then try

Have you ??? (Not in any particular order)

    1) Set your BIOS correctly? How to... http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=9

    2) Set your "virtual memory" correctly? for size of RAM used? TO change virtual memory SETTINGS....
START > RIGHT CLICK MY COMPUTER > PROPERTIES > ADVANCED > PERFORMANCE > SETTINGS > ADVANCED > VIRTUAL MEMORY > CHANGE > PUT CURSOR IN THE "INITIAL SIZE" AND CHANGE (i HAVE FOR MY 1 GB SET THIS AT 2500 > CANE MAX SIZE (FOR THIS i HAVE SET 4000) > SET > OK APPLY > REBOOT FOR CHANGES TO TAKE EFFECT!

    3) Uninstalled any (including any trace of a demo in registry) and all demo files. Then reinstalled properly.. http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18709

    4) Do you use the play now option? http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10321

    5) Did you know that ATI endorse Catalyst 5.8 for Radeon cards for BF2 http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=25562

    6) Have you got probs after 1.02 patch "LOOK" and unloaded cache files?

    7) HAVE YOU FITTED NEW HARDWARE "DO THIS" http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17414

    8) Did you try this? An Answer to BF2 Crashing, Freeze, Lag http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9310

    9) If / when fitted / added RAM did you consider :- http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13425&highlight=vertual+memory

    10) Done a full uninstall and reinstall of vid drivers (see KingOfKhaos thread in this link)http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19184&page=2&highlight=vertual+me mory

            Re: Crash to desktop, 6800GT

            AMD 64 3400+ w/thermalright XP-120 Heatsink + 120mm fan - 5 heatpipes(its a beast)
XFX 6800GT 256MB w/Zalman ZM80D-HP GPU cooler - 2 heatpipes (slightly modded to actually WORK with the 6800GT)
            1GB DDR333

rest doesnt matter - its not over clocked - XP install is less than 2 weeks old, all the lastest drivers (except for GPU - 77.77 doesnt like my system) - and flashed the bios to the latest revision a week ago -

25 background processes or less during game play - it lags often and sometimes hardlocks- the HD has gone through FULL testing - its 100% healthy - so.. yeah.. theres some issues somewhere... a lot of 6800GT users seem to have problems. - the system will run basically any other game @ MAX EVERYTHING - unreal tourny 2004 @ 1600x1280 with fulldetail.. is a beautiful thang. so WTF is up with BF2!!???

                  Re: Crash to desktop, 6800GT

Ok, well i upgraded windows (sp2 and all the fix's) i tried the virtual ram, done the registry scan (33 errors) but didnt fix em, cant be bothered paying heh
                  then i done the speedupmypc
managed to play 2 maps, didnt crash (i actually closed the game of my own accord for once WOO!)... however the stutters are back... and the beggining of a map it stutters for about 2-3 minutes and then smooths out...

im scared to change any settings to stop the stutter in case the crashes come back, but i want to tweak it to make it a non-stuttering, non-crashing bf2 experience

so far, so good! thanks sharkie and all those that replied

SO people with problems, try speedupmypc http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9310

it may just work for you :)
