Computer Freezing When Splash Screen Comes Up

A friend is having some troubles getting Battlefield 2 to work on his machine. When he inserts the disc into his DVD drive the autoload appears. Then when he clicks to play the game (single or online, doesn't matter), the autoload disappears and then the little loading splash screen pops up. It sits there for about one minute and thirty seconds to two minutes before his computer completely locks up and he has to force restart the computer. He left it like that over night just to see if it was simply bein' a pain.

Here are his stats:

Windows XP Pro SP2 (Completely up to date)
1024MB RAM (I believe DDR 233Mhz, can't remember)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (With latest drivers from ATI.com)
Athlon 64 3000+
52x Combo DVD Drive
PC CD version of Battlefield 2 (with latest patch, older version doesn't work either)
Latest version of DirectX.

I ran dxdiag and everything checked out fine. This is the only game that doesn't work for him. I tried a repair install of Windows XP just to see if that'd work, nope. We have tried re-installing the game numerous times. I even tried seeing if updating the DVD drive's drivers would help. There were no updates available for it.

We also tried uninstalling his AVS and Firewall. Minimal processes are also running the background. We have done up-to-date anti-spyware scans with Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Microsoft AntiSpyware. And of course an up-to-date virus scan. Any suggestions? Oh yeah, I also updated SafeDisc, as it said on EA's website for fixing crashing to desktop problems on load, though this isn't the same problem.

We have also diabled anti-spyware stuff, and also tried changing the speed of your drive.

Have you had a look in the patchlog.txt in ..\My Documents\Battlefield 2\dmp\

it will list if it patched correctly, e.g. if it skipped important files. Many ppl have had troubles because the use *****, and some of them alter bf2.exe or core.dll and thus the update skips these files and the game crahsed at spalsh. If you reinstalled this probably would be the case as a new installation would probably overwrite these edited files.

You can try unistalling manually to remove all traces of BF2, explained here:

You can also try removing old drivers, mainly video drivers, explained here in this thread, which has similar topic so this might be a good idea to read rest of thread too:

It can also be because you are using an image of the DVD/CD and this can in some cases make game lock up, so make sure to have latest chipset drivers installed from website of chipset or motherboard maker, not just he ones that came with install CD, plus use latest version of such Virtual Drive software, e.g. Dameon Tools. Uninstalling such software can also help, and on some systems the presence of such software only causes problems and need to be uninstalled.

alright, i'm gonna try cleaning my video driver ... do you think the game will work w/out the newest catalyst 5.8 update? cuz i think that's whats causing the problem

i cleaned my driver, and i tried running the game w/out the 5.8 catalyst drivers ... and it didn't work ... i rebooted my computer... i tried stopping all User background processes and that didn't work ... nothing seems to work for me :-/

It should work with older too, e.g. Omegadrivers are at 5.7 the should work fine, however 5.8 had some BF2 specific fixes, that fixed visual anomilies.

a friend of mine .. told me to change my dvd rom speed... i think the min requirement is 8x ... he told me to put it at 24x .. i can have it maxed at 52x ... but when it loads the game ... my dvd rom keeps going down .. when i rebooted my comp .. i found it at 4x when i put it at 24x .. maybe my dvd rom has something to do w/ it??

Could be, some drivers on some systems just don't work properly with some games.

Make sure to have latest chipset drivers from the website of either manufacturer of motherboard or chipset.

You don't have any virtual drive software installed do you?? If so try uninstalling it, and rebooting, probably not an issue but there are less things to try, so worth a shot.
