Anyway for finding a player whos nick you almost know but not exatly??

The only stats page i know seem to require the exact username

none of them have the ability to search without knowing the exact name

The search feature was disabled at EA's end shortly after the release.

It'd be possible to setup a search feature to search the cached database, but i don't know any sites that have done that.

If the person is online and playing then www.game-monitor.com seems to be able to do this.
