Buy another 512MB of DDR? Really worth it?

The settings that I like, (low/med @ 1024x768) work fine on smaller MEC maps, but get very laggy on the large Chinese maps. So I'm forced to lower them (think it's the texture and terrain), then it works fine.

From your experience, would buying another 512 (for 1gig total) make a huge impact on the larger maps? I'm assuming it would, but need reaffirmation before i spend some $$.

    I got...

    Athlon XP (Barton) 2600+
    Asus A7n8x-x
    Corsair XMS DDR400 512MB
    XFX GeForce 6600GT AGP 128MB

Yeah definitly. And the textures wont matter. Its Terrain which is causing the lag. Terrain is a ram eater. It swallows it hole and doesnt give it back. :P

So yeah get another 512 corsair and you should see great improvement. However if I had cash I would dib it in for 2 sticks of 1 gig corsair.

1gb is what you need. I have 1gb and think adding one more.

Yeah it's amazing how much extra memory will improve performance and load speed. Go for it!

Buying another 512 of ram was like buying a new computer. No lag/stuttering at the beginning of the game, you connect to the game faster and the load times are more than half. 100$ (cdn) will go a long way.

BTW, do a search next time you post a question...because this has been answered before.

          Good luck.

512 is the min requirement for mosts apps now. You will not believe the increased perfomance. Ram is so dirt cheap its a win win.

I have 1G and i am also adding another 512. Few things with your slots though. Depending on your mobo only 3 slots work at a time so don't buy two more and fill it if you don't know for sure. Or just buy a 1g stick

Is this true? This would explain why I felt that when I went from 1 Gb to 1.5. I could of swore there was a drop in performance?

Does it matter what order the memory is in (Ie. Slots 1: 256 Slot 2: 512 Slot 3: 256 Slot 4: 512?

Ya man. You should go to product support page for your board. It usually tells you about the slots and how it works. Also remember that if you have rma that runs at 400 and ram the runs 333 that the 400 will run at 333.

Ah you are using a dell board. It probably doesn't support all the slots. Try a mem test and see if it recognizes all of your ram. If it does then do a benchmark with 3d or any others with your orginal setup and try with your new one. If you get improvement with your new setup it could be your mind playing tricks. But i am pretty damn positive that only three slots work at a time.

Also try running the two 512's together and the two 256's together

the best perfomance you see is with 2Gb memory or more
while buying the game i had 1Gb and waited for 2-3 minutes to load the game
now with 2Gb i wait exactly 30 second (+ - depend on map)

                        Yup...Dell...Mutha futha...

Thanks. The RMA I knew...luckily...I'm clipping with 400 across the board.

                        My questions:

                        1) how will I know what kind of board I have...I'll open 'er up...but I don't remember seeing anything written anywhere....is it in the BIOS?

                        2) Next...is Mem test in the bios? I think I did that when installing....I had to change my mobo...because I fried dimms 1,3...when I had the 2 512's in 2,4 I had a huge difference. All slots appeared to be working fine, but I wasn't getting the FPS I had like before running on med. Didn't help that I had the X300...but I could of sworn I was running on all med....anyway.

                        3) where would I benchmark? or would I do that myself?

                        Thanks.

If you turbo charge your 4 banger would there be a difference? HELL YA! Get all you can afford. The good stuff. Kingston hyper x 3700/466 here. 2.0 gigs. Difference like nite and day.

Ok d00d for all of your knowledge needs there is a nifty program out there cpuz http://www.cpuid.org/clockgen.php

                            get it there

Really really simple to use. It will tell you everything you need to know about your computer.
Than do what i told you to do with your board and find out its capabilities and limitations...

There are a few benchmark programs out there.

This is the actually donwload site for 3dmark03
there are few more on the page but this one is probably more suit to your system
just install it and run like i told you before.

You only have to do this though if your board says all of your slots work. make sure you find out exactly what your baord is capable of.

That should give you more indicators of what might be going on.

We are almost there d00d. heh
                            :) GOOD LUCK
