    Vehicle Speef Calculations

As I was with Battlefield Vietnam, I have always been curious as to what speeds the players walk/run and also at what speeds the vehicles are traveling. I did the calculations and converted them into miles per hour. I did this by going into my own server and going out about 99 meters from the flag b/c by looking at the flag I can see how far I am from it and can get an accurate calculation. Actually, I went out farther than 99 meters and just started the timer at that distance to reduce the acceleration effects. These numbers are rounded a bit and there was some challenge in starting the timer at exactly the 99 meter mark but I think these are reasonable estimates. Here are the number I came up with from slowest to fastest:

Crawl - 1.75 miles per hour
    Walk - 9
    Run - 16
    AA - 24
    Tank - 28
    APC - 33
    Diesal Vehicle (Chinese) - 42
    Jeep - 55
    Desert Patrol - 55

As you can see, the players walk at a speed of 9 miles per hour and run at 16 miles per hour. Not bad considering each soldier is carrying about 80 pounds of gear. :)

For me this kind of blows the "realism" factor out of the water. So many people talk about how they want this game to be more "real" but can you imagine if the soldiers walked at a more reasonable 3 miles per hour and ran at about 5 miles per hour?

Also, I hear so many people say, "Hey, let's take this desert patrol car it is faster than that jeep you have." I think that since the desert patrol is closer to the ground people get the feeling it is going faster because the ground appears to going by faster. I think I have dispelled this myth.

Anyway, I did this just for fun but maybe this info will help you make better vehicle choices. :)

HEHE - I put "speef" instead of "speed". I tried to edit the post but even though the title changes while reading the post it doesn't change on the list of threads. Weird. Anyway, sorry guys...

It's not really walking, it more like there's jogging and sprinting. How did you measure a mile?

Anyways, if those numbers are accurate, then yes, footman speeds are faster than real life. But I'm sure this was done for balance issues, to make it reasonable to walk when you luck out on finding a vehicle. Same reason they reduce the speed on jet fighters, to make them playable.

The buggies might be more maneuverable and have better acceleration.

Congrats on a successful little experiment. But I think all the distances are in metres, not miles.

EDIT : Nevermind, I see what you did.

I just converted meters per second into miles per hour.

Interesting. Now when I'm playing I can be like "OmG, h4x! You can't shoot a guy running 16mph!!1"

Ah, ok, you're assuming the in-game distance indicators are to scale. I suppose they probably are.

now instead of converting metric to imperial how about using the proper measure and giving us KMH :)
