Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
They're punks that are scared of dying and think a tank is safe...but they don't realize that wasting the tank like that makes them lose the round...especially on a map like karkand. -

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
On every map I've seen there is at least one building impervious to artillery shelling. The Commander should hold up in such a building. Some do but I'm not sure whether or not they realize that being inside the building or bunker is enough protection for them.Comment

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
I don't know why they do that.. When enemy is in an aircraft and have it on bombing mode (which I always do unless I've got a lock on an aircraft) then the tank would have a box around it and they'd get bombed or shot by the aircraft.Comment

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
As a top 10 commander I would like to shed some light on this.
When I command there are a couple of reasons why you can see me in a vehicle
1) Either I stole it from the enemy and like to keep them from using it
2) I realize that noone took that particular vehicle when the game started and I use it to defend the base. On songhua stalemate as US for instance. Sitting in the tank or an APC in the base is a real lifesaver for the team. When someone tries to ninja the base you take em down and the team can keep on Mashtuur-Bating
3) I always sit in "something" because it builds up award time. It can be a stinger missile, car whatever.
Note: You will not see me in the base tank on karkand or Peninsula because the team needs that tank to win the map. However if the team refuses to use it after i yelled on them a million times (yes this happens sometimes its crazy i know) I take the tank myself and go to the frontlines.
Also a sidenote. A commander gets more points by letting his team use the good hardware rather than himself. Because more points for team = more points for commander.
As you can see there might be good reasons for a commander to use a vehicle. Think about it.

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
i assume they do it to stay safe from artillery, but as the previous post says there are buildings that do this and so they shouldnt tie up team assets.
EDIT
Hey MrDeus nice explanation. Gratz on the top 10, i kinda figured ud be up after i saw u command on Boomtown/BBBComment

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
earlier today on kubra dam, i waited till everyone took a vehicle and there was an apc left at the us main base, so i took that and proceeded to go to the mec airfield while stopping alone to help with orders uav etc, anyway eventually the mec airfield was taken over and none of my teammates spawned there and i still had the apc. i ended up defending that airfield for most of the game as no one would want to hang back.
there are some cases when its useful, but in most i just let the team do their best in the vehicles as they are more useful to them than me. but when no one is around and you dont want the enemy to take it to cap that point, i dont see why i shouldnt just keep it out of the enemies hands. if i see a friendly come up ill ask him and get out for him.
90% of the time im not in a vehicle commanding and it is only on those rare occasions i am.
just my take on the situationComment

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
Ok for defending but most of the time the game starts, jump quickly into a vehicle and stay there or worst take a chopper and go beyond the first map limit and stay there, how lame is that ...Comment

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
this annoys me so much apart from defending a flag a commander should not be in a vehicle...when im on karkand in that apc i need that abrams cos i dont really want to go up against a t90 while the jackass commander just sits in the tank twiddling his thumbs...Comment

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
I cant stand commanders who think its better to fly planes. what use are you if you are in commander screen in a plane? im sure one of the other pilots could use it better and most likely keep the air opposition down better than you...Comment

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
On Dragon Valley nobody stays to defend the main base so I'll sit in a tank and be Commander/Base Defense. It's definately better than letting the enemy come in and use all the armor against you.Comment

Re: Commanders in vehicles ...
Commanders hanging out in specific vehicles usually means that they are going for ribbons. Kills using the artillery while in a vehicle for some reason count as a kill for the vehicle.
E.g. sitting in a tank doing NOTHING for 15 minutes but getting 19 artillery kills = armored service ribbon
I hope they change this in v1.03.
It will leave the commander position open for people who actually WANT to be commander.Comment
