  • 9800 Pro 128 or 256mb version?

Hi all i was wondering what would be better to play bf2 on a 128mb or a 256mb version of the 9800 pro. You see i can get the 256 mb version for a few more dollars and don't mind paying a little extra if it will perform better. But i have heard reports that the 256 version performs no better than the 128mb version! but they were older reviews and mentioned games in the future needing 256? So i am a little confused.

    Please give me your thoughts

Before BF2 it probably wouldn't have mattered a great deal though.

My other option is a 6600 GT 128 or 256mb version. I am unsure of the brand though... i think it may be xpertvision? Are they no good or are all brands basicllay the same?

If choice is between 9800 pro and 6600GT I would go with the 6600GT. When comparing nvidia and ati the 6660GT would be compared to the x700 and not the 9800 that is far older.

Maybe take a look at the new ATI x800GT it should have a pretty good performance/price ratio, there shoud be reviews of it around, haven't read them myself just saw headlines.

Forget the 9800 PRO. It was a great card and still is good but it's showing it's age and the 6600GT is better even if only by a small amount. 256MB is also the way to go especially if the difference in cost is minimal. It will help with games like BF2 that have a heavy texture load.

As regards to brand yeah basically they are all the same. You do get the odd one that stands out above the rest like the BFG OC's but if you're gunna overclock buy a stock one cheaper and do it yourself. XFX, Inno3D or the xpertvision will all be fine.

as guy above said forget 9800pro cos the 6600gt stomps it...

also forget the x800gt it is a worthless card it is 6600gt performance without pixel shader 3 so is poop...

              6600gt ftw....

There really isn't much difference between the 9800 pro and 6600GT, my friends have both and play at similar settings. The ATI's colors even look better.

save a bit more money and you can easily get a x800pro with 256, which is alot faster and nearly the same price!

Who cares about shader model 3. It only matters in Open GL games like Doom 3 and Far Cry. BF2 is a Direct 3D game, which is mainly ATi's domain (besides 7800 series, they are the next gen, i wanna see what ATi can do) and the X800GT is a good card. BUt i recommend getting a vanilla X800, 128mb for 155 bucks, 256mb for 200 bucks, it has 12 pipes, it's better than te 6600GT on BF2, same price 4 extra pipelines, it's a good deal, better than the X800GT.
