Bizarre problem

This is going to be a fairly long post to give as much detail as I can.

Battlefield 2 was taking a long time to verify the client data (i.e. 3 mins) but otherwise ran fine. I decided to reinstall sine I hadn't done that for a while in the hope it might fix the problem. It certainly did fix the problem and battlefield 2 was running fine.

Then I started to experience a large drop in FPS (to the point where it was unplayable), I hadn't changed any settings or installed anything else. So I decided to again reinstall windows (since it wouldn't really take that long) and I didn't really know what the problem was.

Once again I installed BF2 but to start with I was having the slow FPS problem, I ran the speaker wizard and for some reason that fixes the problem. Next day I boot up my computer to find the problem has reappeared again, although running the speaker wizard doesn't help. I try going back to catalyst 5.6 drivers and that, once again, fixes the problem. And yes, you guessed it, next day I boot up and the problem is back.

As I am sure you can imagine, I am really sick of spending 3 hours every night trying to get this to work again.

My system specs are: AMD 2600XP, 1 gig 3200 RAM, radeon 9800 pro, onboard nforce 2 sound.

However my specs alone would not show the problem since sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.

today, try latest mobo drivers. tommorow when it comes back again, try flashing bios. when it come back again the day after that, re-install direct-x. then the day after that switch your sound card to hardware acceleration. The next day switch it back to software acceleration..........................

try defragging the hard drive that installed bf2 into, bloody game really chews up the hdd...Tried this on a coupla mates systems, and it fixed the same problem.

The point is that it works fine after some kind of a change occurs, but then restarting the computer means it reverts back to slow FPS mode.

So I'm completely out of ideas. I've reinstalled windows and the game several times already.

First of all, make sure your system is streamlined without anything unnecessary running in the background.

Make sure there is nothing you don't want running in your Startup folder (Start, All Programs, Startup)

Next, make sure you don't have any unnecessary junk starting up with your PC. Only if you're comfortable editing the registry and knowing what you're doing, do this:
-open regedit.exe
-Go to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
-remove anything there that you know is safe to remove and you don't need running

Then, try disabling unnecessary Windows XP services..maybe they are being stopped by the changes your are making but are restarted again as soon as you reboot.

I've just tried playing Half Life 2 - it's running completely fine. Seems to be some kind of problem between my computer and BF2 but not just some general hardware issue.

But BF2 is a lot more hardware intensive that most games. It can bring out a system instability moreso than another game.
