Engineers are scarce at the best of times and why call an engineer (if there is another one) away from the front which is probably miles away when you can do it yourself. To me it's a waste to use a supply drop on your assets when it could be put to better use for the men on the front who really need it to help win the game for you.

Fixing assets yourself does take more than one second but probably less time than a supply recharge.

I absolutely HATE HATE HATE when honourless idiots refuse to get out your attack helo when you have your own clanmate who you have been gaming with for 3 years, and are on ventrilo with right now. They probably don't know you have a clan mate nearby. I never check for these things.

That sounds kind of hypocritical don't you think? Honorless idiotic annoying dumbass, but you fly your Helicopter into the water if you don't get the copilot that you want?

These things happen so it's better to learn to accept it than to fly it into the water.

i get mad when the squad leaders won't copy an order from commander. for one thing it gives squad members an object to attack, repair or whatever, and it's just annoying. just say yes and not follow orders if your going to be a dik. honestly, how hard is it to push page up instead of page down?

As soon as more people learn that commanders don't get points for kills (either from arty or normal weapons) then less players will take on the job IMHO.

Because they pay the same amount to play the game as you do? What right do you have over anyone else? Just cos you and your tard mate been gaming and think your l33t in a chopper doesn't make it yours. And if you think you are doing more good to the team by having you and your clan mate in it ... then why actually fly in the water if someone else gets in? Actually you don't have your team at the forefront you're just selfish idiot... I hate people who try to dictate others while playing an online game and you come top of my idiot list ... good day.

As for commanding and playing, you CAN do both. I was commanding and playing last night over 3 different maps and was placed 1st or 2nd each time but I wasn't once mutinied against infact the UAV was permanently in the air artillery was permenantly on recycle when Supplies were ready i'd announce to the sl's. Playing on publics you can only do a suggestion where to attack... about 1 in 20 times I've ordered someone somewhere they have actually achieved it so really it's not about being good at ordering people it's about being smart and using the tools at your disposal wisely.

                    1) Pre-emptive strikes, spotting a big group of enemies and bombarding them is usually useless as you may get one or two but the rest always get away... might be good for a diversionary attack but usually futile.

If you use your scan's to good effect you will see where the bases are going to be attacked, now this is especially prevelent on maps like Karkand where getting an enemy behind you (as MEC) is usually very hard to come back from unless you stamp it down really quick, so a pre-emptive strike when you see them headed to that eastern base in the middle of nowhere ... before they even get there put an artillery strike on it. Judge how long it takes before you strike hits and judge how far away they are from the Capture area.

This makes more sense than waiting on a base to get neutral then dropping a strike on them ... which usually ends then escaping the area then coming back to complete the capture, if you pre-empt the capture you will kill them before they even know what happend.

                    2) Scans, your scan should always be recycling (as most of your other equipment) you should know where the enemy is at most times when playing, combine it with the UAV in important area's and you will not only give your self but your team the upmost advantage.

                    3) Spotting, no it does not work unless you use the First person menu... currently spotting from the map does NOT FREAKING WORK, I've tested this exhaustively and unless you are in highest zoom on the map it does not work and even then it's dodgy. So all those commanders who spam 'enemy spotted here' stfu because you are not doing your team any damn good.

                    4) UAV, not only usefull in heavy combat area's but usefull to show your team a base is about to be under siege ... or tanks are coming. Don't always set your UAV right in the most heavily populated area, offset it so you can see those who are coming up behind them ... especially on city maps this is important as due to armour being so powerfull people need to know where abouts it is to rid the other team of it.

                    5) Supplies, are not there for your personal benefit! Tanks and APC's require these alot more than any other single player in the team, check your squads to see if there is a squad listed as having armour in it and offer up supplies, 50% of the time they will take you up on it. Even when im in a tank and im offered supplies I will put them in a good position where I can come back to for repairs and re-arm when the take takes a few hits.

Most people know this but some newer commanders do not, but you can repair your other commander assets with the supply crate. yes that's right you can repair them so if you still have your supplies left and are screaming at the team to repair your assets don't moan if you are called a newbie (or n00b as it is now :P).

                    6) best place for a commander, really isn't hiding somewhere but usually in your home base (where the assets are located) and I usually stay as engineer to repair assets as they are damaged, combine this with scans and you can tell when they are coming for you and you can plan accordingly, mines if its ground units ... head to a air defence post if it's air or just plain lie down and wait for them if they are on foot. If you team is sufficiently good enough they will suppress most of the incoming to your home assets you can then move forward to the rear guarding bases and again mount a defence.

Hiding somewhere will not do anyone good, if you are combining your Commanding with defending you will easily rack up some nice points.

                    7) Orders and squads, first and best thing to do is ask people to squad up. This suprising actually works most of the time and people usually form up in to small squads and makes tracking your teams assets (armour and air vehicles) so much easier, combine this with good supply crate drop and you will make a difference. Ordering you team is slightly different kettle o' fish really, on most public games the majority will not obey you no matter what you say, the only way you will get orders down and obeyed is if it makes sense to the squad commander.

Sending a squad to a nearby location has allot more chance of being obeyed than if you are sending them to the other side of the map. Pick a squad that is nearest your objective and order them accordingly. IF there are enemys in the area you want your squad to go to, use the UAV to point out WHY you want a squad in that position ... most orders look stupid and pointless but what you can see, they can not, so if you display it to them they are more likely to obey that order ... and really they want the points as well.

Don't change your orders every 20s, nothing annoys squad leaders more than getting an order heading to that target then getting another to have to turn right around and go all the way back, it not only waste time but in thier eye's you are wasting their valuable fragging time. Use the combined power of squads, usually there are 2-3 people in a squad, it is very rare that it is full up so you will end up with 3-4 squads in your team (or more if it's 64 player). Use these effectively by keeping them fairly close together and they combined will be better than spreading them over maps chasing flags.

                    8) Scoring, now as a commander things do not score the same way as other players. You don't get points for artillery kills, ammo drops, medkit drops or Flag captures. You do get points for normal kills. Also if your team requests for items rather than just drop supplies mindlessly you also score points. It is fairly hard to achieve a good ingame score as a commander as you only get 1 point per kill instead of 2 but if your team wins the round your score is doubled (the score you achieved as a commander ... NOT if you joined commanding half way through the round.)

Now I know im not the best commander out there but it's just what I have learnt the hard way over a few months. :)

                    wow long post sorry :P

Re: how many of you get mad when...?

i also like how enemies kile to come up behind you and try to stab you, its never happends once as a commander, because i see them on the scan, and lay there and wait for them to show them selfs...

sometimes i like to hunt down the enemy commander, because if there is no enemy commander , they dont have anything...like this one time in op clean sweap, i would spawn to the closest base on the mec side, find the commander and stab him, or drop art on them

but i think its a good idea for a commander to run in the front lines, aslong as they do thier jobs

I think that if a commander can manage to fight a good battle on the frontline and also be a very good at dropping constant supplies/arty/uav when needed then theres no problem.

It can only be annoying when the commander keeps dying because then your team has to wait longer to get the things they request.

AMEN - oh and thanks to those smacktards for the extra tickets lost by the intentional kill. Way to look out for the greater good of your team.

                            3) Spotting, no it does not work unless you use the First person menu... currently spotting from the map does NOT FREAKING WORK, I've tested this exhaustively and unless you are in highest zoom on the map it does not work and even then it's dodgy. If you are in the closest zoom - if you see an enemy - and right click ON THE ENEMY UNIT, TANK, JEEP, WHATEVER and select spotted - it designates what you spotted - infantry, tank, etc - and shows just like that on the map. You just need to make sure that your initial right click is close to the target. You can right click on a jeep as it is hauling ass across your screen - by the time you can select spotted it is out of sight - but you will still say - "enemy jeep spotted" - and that little red jeep will be seen flying across the map. I do that all the time.

When you do your scan - if you are all the way zoomed out - you can right click on the red dots and select spotted and it will name off what they are and keep them tracked for that set time period - even though from your zoom level you cannot tell what they are. You can usually venture a guess from the speed and directions they are moving though.

As for the rest of your post - nice work. I agree with a lot of what you said. Had to compliment your first part - and correct this last point.

                            Great post though

I suck at being commander, and don't like doing it. In fact, the only time I'll do it is if everyone else refuses. Invariably, some moron always requests an artillery strike and then runs into that same area... Or the time I responded to a supply request only to be punished for a TK when the crate dropped on his head. I wouldn't be surprised if they somehow found a way to be killed by the UAV. No, no, commander is not for me.
