    Performance issues

    Specs are in my sig..
Details: I've been noticing that, even with this new video card, BF2 in-game performance is sluggish. I did a clean driver install (uninstall, wipe, install) earlier today to no avail. I get around 70-95 fps with no other players, but when I join a 64-player server, my frames bottom out at 14 fps (unplayable for me) and max out at around 50 (most of the time it's at around 19-20 fps). I'm running all medium with no AA at 1024x768. I can't make sense of it, so I'm hoping someone else can.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Performance issues

you are not alone, its pretty known, you can reduce these slowdowns by NOT using commander mode and doing these things:
    - change latency with pci latency tool to 32
    - increase agp aperture size to the max in your bios
    - disable agp acceleration in dxdiag
    - update sound card drivers (new drivers got released yesterday! which improve performance alot), look for the thread here in this forum

it has to be a bug or bad code, hope it gets fixed in 1.03

Well you just told us your problem and solution in your post. You're going into a 64 player server, ranked? 64 player servers are always very laggy because there are just that many people on it. It's even worse if you're going into a ranked 64 server. Even with the system that I have (in my sig) I drop down to about 30 or less when I go into 64 servers.

Yeah, 64 player servers are fun, but only when you have like ping of 70 or lower, i get too much lag, i'm fine with 32 player though.

I have the same problem. Glad to hear i'm not alone... (i guess... would rather not have this problem exist) At least i know it's not just me or my config.

Anyway... so there's this game they brought out for 64 players, but you can't actually really play it with 64 players??

I can't get any decent pings on any servers normally. In the browser, i get a whole bunch with a "0" ping, which means trouble, and then the next fastest usually is above 120. Where can i find these low ping servers?? :) Is it my computer? Is it the BF2 browser? (I notice a big slow down in the background movie playing while it's doing its scan of the servers out there, so i wouldn't be surprised if the browser is just not fast enough to get low pings.)

            Re: Performance issues

Another thing I noticed, at any given time, I'm running anywhere between 45 and 50 processes... A lot. Not sure where they all come from, but I ran adaware and spybot scans and found nothing more than cookies. I'm baffled by the fact that I'm having issues, while my friend's 9600pro churns smooth frames at a higher res. Yes, these are 64 player ranked servers, but my hardware isn't terribly weak. Can we blame this on EA's laziness or on hardware issues (assuming they don't want everyone to buy a 7800gtx before they'll listen to complaints)?

You can look at Black Viper's website on services configuration and how to disable the often unneeded services, it has just gone back online: http://www.blackviper.com

Concearing 64 player maps also take note of this from the readme.txt:

This section is very important to experiencing good internet play!

              - JOINING MULTIPLAYER GAMES:
To get the best performance on your computer we recommend
              you follow these guidelines:

              HARDWARE
Minimum system - Join servers that have up to 16 players

Recommended systems - Join servers that have up to 32 players

High end systems - Join servers that have up to 64 players

              BANDWIDTH
ISDN users - Join games with a maximum of 16 players.

ADSL/Cable users - Join games with a maximum of 32 players.

T1/LAN users - Join games with a maximum of 64 players.
So it is also matter if you think your PC is high-end AND have the appropriate amount of bandwidth.

Ah, i had not spotted that before.... So does that mean you cannot really expect to play 64 player games online without issues if you "only" have cable / DSL?? Or is that a cover their asses type of statement?

This is how I fixed it:

In task manager cancel all tasks under you username apart from explorer. Then launch BF2 and see what kind of performance you get.

T1 is 1,55 Mbps so a Cable or ADSL at similar speed should be able to, it depens what they mean by Cable/ADSL of course, but ppl can hardly complain if they don't meet the recommended config by DICE/EA.

I manage to get by with 1024/256 Kpbs, but have a high-end PC so that is a factor as well.

I don't believe my connection is the problem (3.0/512) since I had two friends over and we were all able to play just fine. Maybe it's something that will be addressed with the 1.03 patch? *hopeful*

                        Re: Performance issues

get in a ranked server close to your house,,, for instaance i live in the west cost... so i use the gamecenter 64 west and get hardly any lag,,, if i signed onto a england server i would get more lag/...

have you ever thought of overclocking your processer?

i think you should.... join the ocforums.com ... and post there... lol i got a huge preformance boost by ocing ... maybe you will too.

is your X800 pro a VIVO? if it is you should flash its bios to a X800XT with 16 pipes...

                          Re: Performance issues

I used to overclock, but haven't lately because I haven't needed to (and partially because my old board fed too much voltage to my 9600xt and killed itself as well as the card). I'll see how high I can get with this board and hopefully I can get it to perform.
Unfortunately for me, my x800pro isn't a VIVO. Damn ati.

Also, I've noticed no improvement in fps at 800x600@85hz as opposed to 1024x768@85hz. This leads me to believe that it's not my video card having issues, but another component. Fwarg.

                              Calm down there buddy :P
I ended as much as I could, but some of the processes I needed to run. I still got the same performance at both 800x600 and 1024x768.
