CD-RW Drive Not reading CD's or anything

    Hi
I recently bought a Sony CD-RW drive as a second drive. It opens and closes fine and the cable seems to be plugged into everything correctly. But when I put a CD in it nothing happens, when I double click the drive in My computer it says there is no CD in the drive. I need this second drive to work. Anyone know what I can do to fix it? It didn't come with any cd's for drivers of any sorts.

this is what i orderd: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106828

    Thanks

It seems it's getting power from the P.S. to open/close. Maybe you have a bad IDE cable? Can you see it in your "Device Manager"? If so, try downloading the drivers online (just google it). Good luck.

I see it in addhardware, says it's working fine. Couldn't find the driver sadly. Am I missing it? HELP

You shouldn't have got any drivers with it so don't worry.

What is it listed as in device manager?

if it's in the device manager fine, try putting in a bootable CD and rebooting the system to see if it'll load out of windows. If it does, then it's a driver issue. If it doesn't then it's a problem with the lazer on the drive and you should send it back.

This might be a bit off, but check the jumpers on the drive itself. I'm not sure which works best, but I had 2 CDs before and I had them set to master/slave instead of cable select. I never did too much research on it - it just worked with master/slave.

How do I check the jumpers. I recall a master/slave thing but I don't know how to get to that point.
No CDs do anything in the drive
In device manager it says the name/brand/and function of the CD-RW drive.

I had the same problem after installing old drivers on my CD creator disc. I had to fix it by doing a registry edit. Try that, proceed with caution, you can really screw stuff up if you do it wrong.

Yup, you need to check the jumpers on your drive. Either set them to cabel select, or set one as master, and the other as slave.

To find the jumpers you probably will have to remove the CD-drive from your case. The jumpers should be next to where the IDE and power cables connect. Most CD drivers will have the jumper settings printed on the back, but for some you will have to find it in the manual/online. The drive you bought (Sony CRX230EE/B2), the jumper settings are written on the top cover - in this picture the jumper is the little green connector.

If you still can't find it, post your CD drive's mark and model and I'll try to find it for you.

I have the feeling that Dethred might have the better answer. I *think* that if the jumpers are not properly set, the CD drives won't even be recognized by your BIOS hence not seen on Windows. So, try to fiddle with the proper driver first and beware: some drivers are awfully difficult to find.

Another side note: if you have a DVD driver and it's region locked, there are a few websites that have tons of region-unlocked drivers. It's easier to find drivers there then on the manufacturer's website.

Let me know if you were able to fix this.

Re: CD-RW Drive Not reading CD's or anything

I opened up my machine but never had anything plugged into the jumper drive. All I had plugged in was the Host Interface wire and the power wire....the computer I am on now has it done that same way but both drives work when I put a cd in. the second drives jumper on this computer though seems to have a white plug over it unlike the one on top.

I dont know anything about jumpers....

A jumper is merely a small slide that fits onto 2 pins on the back of your hard drive. When I say small I mean like green pea sized, if not smaller. It tells the drive what to report to the BIOs, either Master, Slave, or Cable Select (in which case whichever is on the primary strip of cable is the primary drive).

After trying every possible jumper positions and combinations the Driver still didn't work. I am sending it back and am going to install a new one. I know a lot more about jumpers now. I'll update you as soon as I get ym new driver.
