Are accounts tied to serial numbers?

My friend said he logged in to his BF2 account at a lan cafe, but I thought that accounts were bound to the serial numbers?

Accounts are not bound by anything other than a password. You could be on a different system with a different installation of BF2 on a different IP, but if you know the username/password, you can play as that account.

What about if someone got your serial number, installed BF2 and then made another account and tried to play? Would they be able to play?

Re: Are accounts tied to serial numbers?

Our accounts are only protected by passwords........so if someone else finds out its gone theres no serial number to protect it

Thats exactly what I was wondering.

Would somebody be able to borrow somebody else's cd, install it with their serial, and then make an account and get a no cd crack and play without any trouble?

Why not, that would be just like if you got at new PC and made a new gamespy/bf2 account.

Only problem would be when game detects more than one CD-KEY was in use already I imagine.

The really worrying thing about the CD-key in the registry is the fact that it isn't encrypted it is in pain text, so if a new worm/virus comes along that harvest CD-keys it would have no problem getting the BF2 key. Many other games encrypt keys for this very reason.
