Same here, looks pretty scary messing about with files I know nothing about!

I've been looking for an idiots guide but can't find much! Any pointers?

Firstly you need to download and install the mod.

Many of them come with a new BF2 link that gets installed to the desktop but if not then run BF2 as normal and once you've logged in, click the Community button and then Custom Game and you should see the list of installed mods. You can now select one to play it.
