Crash after spash screen

This just started tonight, I'm at a lan, so it's a REAL pain in the ass.
I double click the battlefield 2 icon, and it shows the splash image, screen goes black, and a few seconds later it crashes to desktop. No error. Nothing.

I just recently updated to catalyst 5.8 and noticed a significant increase in performance. That said, it worked just fine last night. I try to run it today and have no luck. I uninstalled catalyst drivers, tried with the version that came on the cd I got with my card. That didn't work, so I reinstalled 5.8, no luck. I uninstalled bf2 and didn't patch on both driver versions, and then with the 1.02 patch on both, and none worked. I've tried everything I know, and if I can't see an error, I can't fix the problem.

Edit: I also tried running with catalyst 5.5 and got the same result.
Any ideas?

You could try cleaning display driver files, so only one driver set is instaleld to cause problems, here's how:

When installing different drivers etc. that you have to make sure that you uninstall any previous drivers and ATI control panels.

1) Go into Add/Remove control panel and remove all drivers and ATI control panels. The ATI uninstall utility should do both.

2) Boot into Safe Mode. F8 just before Windows boot.

3) If any driver plug&play detection comes up, click cancel.
While in safe mode use Driver Cleaner, http://drivercleaner.net and remove any drivers relevant to ATI.

4) Boot into Windows normally. If any driver plug&play detection comes up, click cancel.

5) Install driver with its installer. Reboot when finished.

Now there's only one driver set for the display adapter installed.

If you havn't installed drivers for your monitor do so, get them at website of manufacturer of monitor, using MS plug&play drivers might hide some functionality, like some resolutions/refresh rates are restricted.

You can also try moving the folder 0001 or 0002 etc located in the folder ...\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles , e.g. move them temporarily to the Desktop.

The 000X hold your game settings, keyboard bindings, audio and video settings.
Then start the game and use the Retrieve function to retrieve your accout and now you have you login account by with fresh default settings, and go from there. You have to set all your game settings again of course.

i was having the same problem after installing the 5.8, couldnt get them to work after following your advice but i did manage to get the drivers i was using before (omega) working again.

Turns out it was the profile trying to run bf2 at 85hz (my CRT at home that's normally the primary) on my LCD (secondary, but my lan monitor), which goes up to 75hz. Ah well.

Anytime you change anything with BF2 delete the BF2 folder in my documents completely and emepty the trash then reboot, then restart the game it will have all new fresh profiles/info with out a reinstall of the whole game.

i have this same problem. i reinstalled drivers, directx ,and bf2 annd i still get the crash after the black screen for a few secs. I tried the my documents thing, still not fixed. wtf. i really dont want to reinstall xp.

It was my IOMEGA ZIP drive, PUNKBUSTERS TECH, says it could be the ZIP DRIVE, there DVD or the 6 in1/7in1 floppy card readers. Deleted the driver and so far no more crash.
