ORDERED NEW PC: will it run BF2?

XP Pro

I'm concerned about the video card mostly
Next year I'll bump up ram to 1GB


I played the game at a local FRYS which is a good hour drive and was hooked!
My current PC AMD 1.2, 768MB PC100 was acting up last night again and I decided to replace it. I can not afford a better video board right now.

What do you guys think?

Low settings.

You need 1GB for medium settings

1gb of dual channel and good timings for high or 2gb for high.

2.8 is medium, an amd64 processor will kill it in games.

Your graphic card sucks to say the least. lol

Oh it'll run...

I have the videocard...it runs pretty good... you won't get ultra settings and on meduim (beautiful) you get lower fps, however with that ram you won't be able to run it on meduim. Spend the money now for 2x256 mb of ram or 1x512. It'll be worth it. Get the new videocard later...if you buy the vidcard now...you'll still be short the ram.

I was running my 3.0 Intel P4 with 512 with low to mid settings with 0 or 2xAA...you'll still be happy, but blistful when you get the ram.

Trust me.

IDE CD (I'll use my existing DVD burner)
19" LCD
838 - 100 mail in rebate
DELL DIMENSION 4700

I know AMD cpu is faster and better overall but I've learned that DELL systems work right out of the box. No messy hardware conflicts, ... that's after working 5 yrs with them supporting 700 PCs. Yes I know the video is weak but that's all I could afford.

Dell did not offer 1 stick of 512 but rather I have 2x256
the MoBo has 4 memory slots total

Last game I played was Call of Duty so this should be a welcoming change (and I loved COD and MOHA)

It's a shame you have already ordered it...I would have waited personally till you could have got a better one!
Best thing to have done it wait until the full PC Spectrum of hardware if utilised
i.e. DDR3 RAM, Shadow Effects and Dynamic Lighting.
No game actually utilises them fully or at all.

Hey

Don't feel bad about dell...I'm a big fan...just for the support. I had a problem with my DVD writer 8 months in and they replaced it no charge and even paid for shipping both ways.

You did a good thing by getting the x300, not for it's graphics, but Dell overcharges for the upgrade.

I went so far as to order my Ram from Dell, so they can't scream at me for not using dell parts thus voiding the warranty. It cost me about 200$ cdn to buy 1 GB (2X512...cheaper). While installing....I think I fried my Dimm slots ..they are sending a techie to replace my motherboard...again free of charge.

The only problem with Dell...they don't give you a clean box...it's loaded with crappy software.

Anyway...you'll be fine with the x300 but it might take some tinkering...you'll need the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI...and you'll probably have some lag for the first 1 min of the game...depending on your settings.

I've got the same...you'll still be able to put up to 1 gb per slot. Call dell tech support and ask them...They'll tell you what you need.

years ago I was an advocate of clones as all my previous PCs were clones virtually, then I started working where we had almost exclusivelly Dells Optiplex GX1, GX100, GX110, GX1150, GX260, GX270 and so on. I was relly impressed how easy they were to work on: hardware, drivers, tech support, ...

My main PC at home is AMD 1.2 athlon, 768 PC100, all on a ABIT mobo, nvidia 5200 AGB 128MB, 60GB and 40GB IDE. This is the fastest CPU it will take plus I know the mobo is dying (the 3,4 IDE controllers are shot, and even now it will reboot on it's own). My other PCs are Dell OptiPlex GX1a, GX1, GX1 and HP Netserver. I'm aware that AMD is cheaper and faster and Dell considered using them at one point.
However simplicity and stability is also very important!

Listen...and listen good. You did a good thing. When you get your computer and run BF2 without any stuttering (a problem you will never know)...you will thank us. Moreover, we just save you 500 bucks that you would of shelled out a on videocard that will probably drop in price in the Fall and you would of been bitching cause you didn't have enough ram.

So I accept your thanks of the behalf of everyone that responded to this post. hehe.


Besides the money you spent on ram, you would of spent going out to some bar...now you can stay home and not have a hangover...unless you have a wetbar at home...hmmmm an idea.

Be nice to those Dell reps...they are in India and going through a lot of flooding lately....pretty crazy tho'...we buy parts that equal a months salary.
