Will the expansion pack make this game too different?

The big battlefields are already not my cup of tea, so with all of this covert and "special" weapon abilities coming in the expack, I don't know if I will like the game as much. Especially with Quake 4 coming out at the same time!

Although more city maps may be better, I like infantry battles the most. But I hope the game doesn't become too complex in terms of the system of fighting, no fps needs that!

I entirely agree about the big battlefields, but I think/hope you've got the expansion backwards.

The developers, when talking about BF2:SF have mentioned:
    - they have realised that people prefer the urban maps with tightly compressed fighting.
    - the 'new stuff' they are adding all looks small-scale ('light' vehicles, 'light infantry') etc.
    - all of the pictures of SF have been of troops... not tanks/jets/artillery.

Whilst they've been vague about everything, I'm really hopeful the developers will remove all the heavy equipment from SF, tighten the maps, remove the x-thousand flags etc.

However, there are a number of new games coming out to challenge BF2, so from a player's point of view - I just want one of them to get it right.

Yes it does if you like crappy games like quake then BF2 isn't for you.

Making it more infantry based would be nice as there really wouldn't be a point in the grappling hooks etc. However, considering Call of Duty releasing shortly which is specialising in close combat action who knows whether the BF2 expansion will succeed...

Night maps will definately make a great deal of appeal to me and adding an objective element will certainly get me to buy it... I think they should put in a game mode besides capturing flags. Then again it is BF so doubt they will do :|:

I expect they will have objectove based maps for SF. But at the same time i hope they DON't make it too close quarters or they'll ruin it.

As for COD it doesn't even come close to BF2 so unless they DRASTICALLY change it for the new version release which i doubt they will then its not going to be any competition for BF2.

Big Sammy, Quake a crappy game? I think that if you ask people out there, they may have a different opinion!

I hope the expansion is more infantry, I really hate the large maps. They are so boring unless you are a jet or attack helicopter!

There's also a 'enemy territory: quake wars' under development - a futuristic 'BF2-style' game for those that dislike quake...

I finally found a reason why I don't like BF2 anymore - no reason to be stealthy nor care about your death....no matter how hard you will try to hide you won't be able to kill person in one shot..he will bunny hop and then it's usually face to face jump-n-shoot around...when I played Operation Flashpoint and your spawn is far away from flags you really try to be stealthy, and look for any places where enemy might be...imho, this is completely irrelevant in BF2, and certainly this takes away the military feeling of the game (for me)...BF2 is like military mod for UT, nothing more....

CoD2 may prove to be a threat especially for those people who like close quarter combat... which BF2 is failing to offer. Perhaps the 16 player maps offer this, maybe... but CoD2 offers that in no doubt. I am not slagging off BF2 or undermining your thoughts its just that the two games target different audiences and thus the expansion pack looks great and offers unique features - grappling hook very interesting and the night based maps but CoD2 won't have the same playability, I mean you won't see 64 player based servers on CoD2...

                    Expansion packs sounds great though!

Not holding my breath for the expansion pack. If they follow their trend with BF expansion packs (Road to Rome and Secret Weapons and BF Vietnam which was like a more expensive crappy expansion pack) it's going to be let down

Ow yeah .. perfect for those long walks in the country side to be abrubtly ended by that sniper that actually has the time and patience to lay around and wait for hours .... sorry .

I know that BF2 is more acrade action but this makes it fun .. if this is not your cup of team .. might I suggest getting back to OF, or possibly America's Army if you want to be killed with the first bullet that is shot in your general direction ..

every game has it's charme, and this is BF2's. If you can't see it, then quit

I find it strange that most people seem to dislike the elements of Battlefield that are unique and make it stand out against most online shooters.
e.g. "I like Battlefield; except for the vehicles and large maps that is"

Surely there is no shortage of FPS with corridor based combat and no vehicles. I've certainly been playing them for years.

People like close quartet combat, look at just how popular Strike at Karkand is. To me, this is battlefield at its best. It still has the "battlefield" feel, and not a corridor shooter like Quake 3 or CS, but it is a lot more frequent combat.

It sucks to be a big map like Cleansweep. Cap a flag, cap the next flag, get bombed by a jet, get in a jet, bomb a little, repeat. At least close quarter urban maps lets you fight a lot so the action is always cookin'.
