Quick Jargon Question

I know this isn't strictly Battlefield related, but I just wanted to ask a quick question on one piece of jargon I have seen whilst browsing the various threads on this forum. What is this "leet" or "1337" that i see referred to in various peoples comment's?

I know this may be a stupid question to some of you, but I guess I may be getting old (30 next year *sniff* *sniff*) and I'm not as up-to-date with current language abbreviations that seems to be more and more common these days.

Man, that takes me back. I used to play CS, and from what I remember leet is basically elite. If you're leet, it means you're skilled. Just to be confusing it also refers to the 4nn0y1ng '//4y 0f 7yP1ng '//17]-[ 51||y |\|umb3r5.

Cheers people thanks for clearing that up. Why can't people just write "elite" then? I mean its one extra key press, which is hardly a monumental effort. I wonder if anyone will actually be able to compose a comprehensive English sentence in ten years?

Heh, in online gaming one extra key press makes a monumental difference :p
Seriously though, people who frequent the internet, whether on forums or on games usually have the intelligence of a sausage, and are capable of little more when it comes to writing coherent sentences.
1337 speak really is retarded though, it took me about 10 times longer to construct the sentence a few posts up.

In general, people with similar hobbies/interests/ethnic background etc. tend to differentiate themselves from others by developing their own "subculture", including their own way of communication or style of clothing. And that's what it's all about i think :)
