Only thing I can think of is while on the ground there is more splash damage from the rocket causing the instant death, and only partial damage when in the air.

hmmm, wow well anyone else have the problem while driving a tank and you bump a tele.pole, immediatly explode? happens to me all the time on Strike at Karkand left past the bridge heading away from Mec main, the pole @ the corner. :-(

Yes, I have that problem as well. That problem can also be replicated on the Kubra Dam map. You can do it by driving and bumping against the chain link fence/red road barrier bar directly underneath the bridge by the first (closest) CP nearest the USMC starting point.
