that would be a rather large pitot/static tube.

i'd hate to be Sheetmetal and have to change that.

I wonder how many pitot lines the cobra might have, the b52 has 3 pilot, copilot, and AIMS. don't worry about what it stands for. lol


i work guidance and control for b52, we're the ones that actually use the pitot probes.


i'm guessing Zotchman was or is a crew chief for something. or maybe just an airplane fan

mr pitot not only measure the airspeed but also air preasure and altitude (tough altitude is measured by air pressure too :laugh: ) and i dont remember if there is something else measured by this...but at least i know it must absolutely not be air blocked by dirt for example. so maybe it could explain why the pitot tube is right under the main rotor.

actually no, pitot is only used for airspeed.
if it is a pitot probe only, then it's airspeed either indicated, true airspeed(which is corrected for density error{temperature}), or OAS air speed.

and by saying that it measures both airspeed and air pressure is rather redundant. you find your airspeed by using impact pressure. the more impact pressure the faster you're going.

if it is a pitot/static probe, it also senses altitude. static pressure is just that static or ambient pressure felt around the aircraft at that particular altitude.

in a pitot/static probe the large hole infront measures pitot pressure and small ports flush towards the back of the probe measure static pressure. obviously pitot probes don't have static holes.

to compensate for aircraft attitude(not altitude) as in how the aircraft is situated be it a dive, climb, roll, yaw, what have you aircraft have probes on both sides.

in the case for static pressure, there are static ports on both sides of the aircraft(either on pitot/static probes or flush on the aircraft seperate from pitot.) to compensate for crosswinds.

after looking at the chopper today, i really don't think it's either. I side with the fellow who said something to cut power lines. as I have heard of this before. and there seemed to be 3 of these on the helo, one on each side and one in the middle.

the jets however do have pitot probes.
