Thoughts about firing lines, cover, etc.

I was wondering how much thought you guys put into your maps as you go about building them. Is this something you think about the first time as you are modeling, or do you play through the map a bit and tune this after you have gotten through the process a little further.

I will be building a map in the next week or so, and was working through my thought process and ideas before I get going.

    thanks.

Well first I draw out my idea on paper. Then I go about building it thinking about what people would want, what a real city may be like, and how I may want the gameplay to be on the map. My original idea may change as I make the map, but it usually stays toward the original idea.

In my opinion, with the mappers that I have known in other games (mostly CoD) maps turn out better when the maker has an idea of tactical approaches before he starts modeling...but who knows I could be wrong.

Well I think it's important to have a sense of what you want the map to be generally before you start. What kind of gameplay do you want it to create, and what kind of situations do you want to happen when people are playing it. Answer these vauge questions, building up bit by bit with them in mind, and I think you get a nice map.

Cover is one of the things which will come natually if you spend alot of time on your map imo. I have literally spent 9 days working on my map and i think cover is not an issue. You can sort out cover in some way or another no matter what style of map you are doing (such as a very open map you can have the odd building near the spawn point or hills etc..)

I would think a map could easily become favorable for another team if its thought out TOO much. Thinking of tactical approaches usually leead to thinking up a tactical advantage without even realizing it.

The people that made the maps for BF2 may have done this. Sonhua Stalemate as an example.

I do a bunch of research into the real world locations that I am mapping.

For example I am making a map, Battle of Mount Kent, for the WDW mod. This map is set in the Falklands so I went around gathering pics and looking up info on types of vegetation, geological formations, etc of that part of the Falklands.

Also the Google maps search, http://maps.google.com. I use it to find some overhead pics of wherever I plan to map.
