How can a friend join a single player game?

I gave him my IP and the other one (I pressed tab in the game) and he couldnt connect.
Is there a way to create a server and play with him or not?

I have successfully run lan games using singleplayer and having room mate connect VIA IP however I am unable to have a friend at another house connect to it so I am in same boat as you any help would be great

First, make sure you are using your external ip address, not a 192.168.x.x address. You may need to set up port-forwarding on your router/firewall.

And tell that address. The port should be default.
