Horrible FPS (like 1-2 fps) for first 30-60 seconds of game.

Hey I just bought this game the other day after playing the demo for a week or two, and I have noticed a really odd problem whenever I connect to an online server. I will connect to a server and it loads the map, but when I first notice a problem is right after I hit the join game button. Instead of taking me right to the screen, my mouse dissappears and it looks like it locks up, and the music slowly and evenly trails off to nothing, and then mabye 10 seconds later it takes me to the select spawn screen. Now at this point it really has difficulty bringing this screen up, and my framerate drops down to about 1 or 2 fps, until I spawn for the first time. It gets a bit better then but if I make any sudden movements it locks up and the framerate drops way down. However after about a minute it stabilizes and my FPS is fine at around 30-40, and I dont have any problems for the rest of the game.

Now I have played the demo for a while and this never happened to me in the demo. The only change I have made on my side is that I updated to the 5.7 catalyst when I bought the game (I see some posts now warning against that), but as I have no problems during play I doubt that is the problem.

Also on another unrelated note I was curious about what the two seperate numbers meant in the FPS display, if anyone knows that.

turn your textures back down to medium

or get another gig of memory

I will give that a try. I didn't realize that this game took so much ram, everything Ive used before has been just fine with a Gig. Thanks guys.

Also had same problems as you even with the better card...lowered TEXTURES to medium as suggessted already. Worked well. Everything else was high, 4xAA, 1024x768.

Now I have 2x1024 pc3200...
All settings are now at Ultra High, 6xAA, 1024x768...can go higher if needed.

2 gigs of ram solves evey problem this game has(except connection problems, random reboots, random desktopping :) Gameplay is totally smooth.

Get a 2nd gig without hesitation. The future games coming this year and next will also thank you for it.

you need more ram thats it.

with that setup he should run high without a problem. 1gb is enough memory and hes got a prety good video card. this might be spyware or something.

It's RAM..trust me. I had the SAME problem and upgrading to 2 GB fixed it completely.

The sad thing is...this may be fixed in v1.03...so maybe you should hold off.

I upgraded because I figured...why not have 2 GB anyway

Clean your BF2 cache, load another map (optimize shaders), quit, defragmentate and try again.

Also don't try High with just 1GB RAM, won't work, to much swapping.
