Agent, I think what happened was by giving your computer a cold boot (not simply restarting, but shutting it down completely) you cleared the system memory and windows pagefile. This is good. If I'm right about all this, then they key to the connection problem is all about memory usage. The less junk you have demanding RAM or Pagefil space, the less likely you are to get the "Your Connection to the Server has been lost" error.

The summary of what I've found to deal with this (describe in posts above) are to:
    1) Close all background programs to free up memory (smartclose is a great proggie)
    2) Manually update Punkbuster regularly, BEFORE play, so it doesn't have to autoupdate DURING play.
    3) Force BF2 to run at lower memory priority to give the background processes related to your internet connectin/PB querries a chance to get 'computed.'

You're experience adds a good point that I have just taken for granted: cold boot your PC regularly, don't just hot boot it(Tell your computer to shut down and let it cycle off completely, simply 'restarting windows' doesn't do as good a job at purging your memory).

Trivium, the .txt at the end of the batch file is something I had to put on there because of this forum's attachment rules. You can't upload a .bat file, only media documents (pictures, text files, etc) so I tacked on the '.txt' so folks could download it. Once you have it downloaded, right click on the file and select "Rename." Just remove the '.txt' so the filename ends only in .bat. Your computer will tell you that changing the file extension may make this (or other) files perform improperly, but ignore that warning and click ok.

You might also try dropping your in-game graphics detail settings some. The 'lag' you experienced may have been due to a high load from the game not being given as much priority. I noticed a little performance drop myself at first, but after some tweeking with the graphics settings and killing the movies at start up, it now runs beautifully. I decided, I'd rather have a less 'pristine' looking game experience than on that only lasts 5 minutes between resetting my cable modem.

    I hope this helps :)

I started getting the lost connection problem again today, so I turned off my computer and waited a little bit, then turned it back on. Works fine now. I won't say that this is a fix yet, but it has worked for me twice now and I'll continue to keep doing it until it stops. I'll let you know if that ever happens.

Ok. I've been shutting down my computer for 30 seconds, and starting it back up when I get the connection problems. It's worked every time today, and it's happened to me 3 times. Just to make sure I'm experiencing the issue, I join 2 servers and make sure I'm getting kicked before I do the shut down. I hope this helps other people.

          Thanks,

Re: Connection Lost: A Theory (Works for me so far)

I'm officially endorsing the full shutdown of your computer as the fix for this issue. At least on my computer, I can have all my settings on high with no tweaks necessary, and when I occasionally get the connection lost errors, I just shutdown, wait, and turn the computer back on, and I'm playing again for hours.

              Thanks,

Re: Connection Lost: A Theory (Works for me so far)

I tried the .bat file fix. I have also hidden the movies (well worth doing BTW!!). Okay, the game loaded up much quicker than it usually does. I then went into a public server (one of the EA UK official ones). The map took about the same time to load but the Verifying client data stage was much much quicker. I got on to the server but was immediately kicked for 'having modified content'? That has never happened before, I wouldn't know where to begin modifying the content.

The main problem I have been having is it taking an age to verify client data on the first attempt at accessing a server. It will then drop the connection so I have to try again. I always get in on the second attempt. Then have a few minutes lag until it stabilizes. The when the map changes I lose the connection again and have to start over.

Thanks for this thread it is a great help.

Re: Connection Lost: A Theory (Works for me so far)

Huh... have you altered any files in your profile (tried to unlock all weapons for single player), not updated your punkbuster recently, or are you using a non-patched version of the game?

I'm really not sure what the cuplrit for the modified content message is. It seems like if you'd changed or deleted a file you'd know about it. Does this happen when starting BF2.exe normally, or just with the low-priority batch file? If you hid the movies the same way I did, I can't see how that would affect things...

I'd suggest undoing whatever changes you made, then trying them one by one to see what generates the error, and reporting back what you find. Maybe someone here has seen that before. If nothing else and un/re-install should fix that, but that takes so long and is so tedius I try to avoid it unless there is no other choice.

The file I dl'd from here already has a .bat extension?

tactical..i have tried every solution there is to try to help me with my connection problems. I could try one more thing, when u told us to change it from program to background services or w/e and program to system cache or w/e should i do that and then right click my bf2 when i press my control alt delete and put my bf2 on normal? because i did the same thing but bf2 was on below-normal. This probably wont be the problem but all my wires are stuffed in the back of the computer and my ethernet cord is probably all tangled, could my connection not be getting through or something, btw i use a router but i have used a router all this time playing bf2 for months and it was fine until a week ago or so and i didnt do anything to my comp except move it inside my house and get a new monitor..although i am using a different ethernet cord so it might be a bad cord? its pretty old a couple years or so but if i changed it then i would have to climb in my attic

It was only when I used the .bat file to open the game.

Using your original windoze fix has made an enormous difference in itself though. I am now not getting dumped between maps and lag warm up is much quicker.

It is patched and PB is up to date. No modified content just box standard. No other BF2 files touched. I'll have a play about with it later and post the results here.

Thanks guys, have just found this topic and will try all the things mentioned to sort out my connection problems.

And to think PC gaming is supposed to be plug and play these days?! Its almost back to the days of making boot disks to free up as much of your base memory as possible, just to play X-Wing.

                          Cheers,

                          Mike.

That's good advice again Gunny and Tactical_Marksman .....me thinks, in the main, for low end spec.
This also worked for "some" but "not all" with NovaLogic & Joint Ops.

NB ..If it works for you then, cool... do it, but if not, then try something else don't give up.
