Wireless Internet Connection

I was curious if anyone has had any exp, with using wireless cable modem. I just moved into a new place and am trying to figure out a way to get cable so I can get back to gaming. One of my options was going wireless. Has anyone used this? Is the performence affected etc, etc?

Any help would be much appreciated

I'm not sure if you're talking about wireless network, or wireless as a type of ISP.

I live outside of Tampa FL, and up untill a month or so ago my only options for high speed internet were satellite or a local company's "Wireless DSL".

I have a wireless dsl connection. There's a dish on my house that runs to a tower nearby, its kinda like a cellular connection. The dish runs to a std. dlink router. Static IP, 1.5mb down / 384kb up. Overall, the connection works just fine. The tower got hit by lightning and was down, and I had one other issue. I play most nights and on wkends, and usually have a nice ping to east coast servers. I also play CS:S on this connection without issue...

If your'e talking about a wireless network - its a different ball of wax. A friend of mine had to ditch his and go with hard-wired as he was getting a strange lag spike every 10-15 mins or so. I'm sure there are quite a few gamers on wireless that have no problems, but I have heard of the occasional issue with lag-spikes related to the wireless connection...

I'm 100% wireless out here in the sticks.

If you can get good line-of-sight and you're not too far from the nearest access point tower, a wireless connection can be as good or better than wired.

I have TONS of servers pinging between 30-100 ms.

well...im living with my bandmates now and they already have Cox service using a Motorola Surfboard (the new ones) and I was trying to see how I should set mine up. I have a cable line in my room. You think I should just add another modem on to what they have or get my own seperate account.

I too live out in the sticks & am on wireless ISP. I get 1.5 Meg download 256 K up & my pings are good under 80 east & west coasts under 50 central servers

Just get a router/switch and connect all of the computers to that. If you friends to a lot of dowloading you may be in trouble though. I think it's Dlink that makes a "Gaming Router/Switch" that detects what kind of traffic is going through and gives priority to the gaming packets. I know someone that has one and say it works great.

In my experiences hard wired is always more reliable as far as in home networks. I don't have any experience with wireless ISPs.

With Cox you will have to pay more to add another cable modem if they even let you do that. You will probably have to get a completely new account if you want your own modem. They do it by MAC of the modem. If your roommates do a lot of downloading you might want to think about gettting your own line though.

Yeah Slosh...I think I remember that. I havent been able to play for a few days (moving) but im dying to get back into it. The only problem with the router is running my ethernet cable down the hallway. I don't think they're too down for that idea so I was thinking of adding on another modem in my room (splitting the cable from the TV to the modem and doing it that way.

If your talking about wireless networking I'd say forget about it. I have a wireless router and it has been the worst piece of hardware I have ever brought. Monster lag and really poor connectivity, you will spend more time struggling to get a connection than you would if you just hardwire a connection. I've tried to use my wireless on a number of games (from the likes of Battlefront to Comabt Mission) and I've lost count of the number of times I've been killed or lost info because of the poor rates. Spend the money on the saving of the wireless pieces on cable and get yourself a decent network.

I'm sure Cox will charge you extra for adding another modem and I'm not sure if you would still share bandwidth with the other modem. Could you go through the ceiling at all or figure out another way to run the wire. I'm just telling you from my experiences that wireless networks for gaming are not good. I had all the same problems as ODB in the previous post and know lots of people that have too. If you can I would just try to get a router and hard wire everything. I used wireless networking for all of a week and couldn't take the lag anymore and that was 15 feet away...not even through any walls.

yeah....I always thought the "hardwiring" approach is the only way to go, especially for gaming. Now its just a matter of which route to take with it...
