Won't the mod files keep me out of ranked server play? Or are they just there until a server utilizes them? I feel like such a noob...

Yeah you are a mod noob. Let me try and explain:

You can still play vanilla Bf2 ranked servers even after you have mods installed. Once you join a server with the mod installed you will then load the mod. Get it?
