Heatsink on Vid Card?

i have the BFG 5500 OC 256mb PCI card, and i was wondering if the zelman north chip heatsink would be better for it? i just got my new case and it keep my comp very cool, was wondering if i should put that heatsink instead of the fan it came with, and when i get my new mobo and vid card, just move the heatsink to the mobos chip

or is the fan on there good enough?

No, the northchip heatsink refers to the motherboards North bridge chipset, which controls CPU, Memory and graphics (usually).

What you need is a VGA heatsink/fan unit.

I've got the ZM80D-HP w/ fan, had it on my 9600XT, and now my 9800XT. I wouldn't have a graphics card without one these days! They are a bit fiddly to install, but work a treat, and allow decent overclocks on both core and memory.

I have heard good things about the VF700-Cu, but no first hand experience.

i was looking at that one on newegg, kinda expensive, and its for my 5500 dont realy wanna spend that much money on it since im getting a better one later

If you're planning to upgrade to a better card and things later, then why replace it at all? The stock cooler on that card should run nice and cool.

The good part about a good VGA cooler, like the Zalmans, is that you can transfer it over to your new card. Just make sure you don't destroy those little plastic pins holding the stock HSF, and keep it safe. When you upgrade cards (or need your "voided" warranty back!), put the stock cooler back on the card, and transfer the Zalman to your new beast.

The problem is this:

Most of the new cards run a lot warmer, and require a lot better cooling. And no matter what you buy, you will have to get a new heatsink anyways as there will be compatibility issues (different card, different layout).

The ZM80D-HP is a monster! It certainly wipes out a slot either side of the graphics card. I've never seen a pair of these on an SLI machine, although I would assume it is possible, it would really depend on the motherboard. You would need at least two slots free between the two 16xPCIe sockets, plus a slot at either side of each card.

A pair of ZM80D-HP's in a rig would look tuff! I would assume however that if you could afford SLI'd 6800/7800's you would also go for a water cooling solution. Even tuffa!

u know what i did, took a CPU fan and screwed it onto my fx 5200's heatsink hooked it up and its soo cool now, and its overclocked

I have a VF700-Cu on my FX5950 Ultra and it runs a lot cooler than the original cooler that came on it. I recommend it highly. I did have to buy 8 more heatsinks for the Ram though because my card has 8 on each side instead of 4 like the VF700-Cu instructions show (It only comes with 8 heatsinks so I had to use them all on one side of the card leaving the Ram on the otherside open). Not a huge deal as the heatsinks are pretty cheap.

If its bigger but fits....do it, they basically same thing :), i was thinking of chopping up an old stock amd heatsink and sticking them to the ram sinks on the back of my gfx card
