my main issue with bf2: the maps

its been a bit after the release of bf2 and after playing a bit ive come to realize that i too seem to be heavily favoring urban maps above the vehicle oriented ones (that and all the urban ones are mec, and i hate the chinese army equips/maps in general). its not that im some kind of stat whore, or that i dont appreciate the delicate art that is vehicle combat. back in the bf42 and DC days, i was actually more partial to the el alamiens, the bocages, 73 eastings, dare i say it, even gazala had its moments. it wasnt because the infantry system on the bf42 engine was underdeveloped (lost village was still reasonably fun). Ive derived that it comes down to a few major differences between the two games that changes the experiences dramatically.

    -# of vehicles given
even on vehicle oriented maps, BF2 simply gives out too little armor. even at 64 player sizes, ive never seen more than 2 MBT's per uncappable spawn. Even LAVs and BTRs are in short supply. this simply reduces the game to a humvee/infantry walk-athon, which bores people. the fact that the spawn times for each vehicle post-destruction has been shortened is a poor substitute, as with the new system you cannot have the 3 MBT tank column that were such a joy, and made you and your friends feel like real badasses when rolling into a CP. More airpower would be lovely as well. who DIDNT miss those 2 v 2 dogfights back in bf42/dc. the teamwork involved in you and a wingman tagging up to out manuever 2 others. times like those i could have slapped on aviators and been called tom cruise. if increasing # of armor at main is undesirable, at least give each CP a mbt. this gives each CP more value to be held, and also encourages players to use that tank to defend that CP. this leads to my next point

-maps are too damn big and that makes too many damn CPs
i know the devs said that they wanted more map sizet 64 person level so that there was more action to go around, but that has happened to the extreme extent. now, there is not ENOUGH action to go around. at all map sizes, 16, 32, and 64, there are about at least 2 CPs too many on a lot of the maps. i find myself spawning in a base, and waiting in defense forever for action. yet none comes. with bf42/dc even having only 2-4 cappable CPs the game was fun, and i believe because of it. each CP had a high value since there were few others. teams would scramble for one if lost, and defend each vehemently, devoting large resources to save it. now a days, i see almost zero defense of any CPs, and why should there be? with so many, sometimes up to 6 cappable cps, losing one is not a problem. This is why flag skipping is so common. People just roll up to a CP, cap it fast because its undefended anyways, and move on. How many of you can say you can call all the CPs by name and rememeber each distinctly on any given map? theres just too many to really grow familiar with, unlike DC/Bf42 where if you said "north CP" everyone knew what you were talking about. pretty much what im trying to say is that my funnest moments in DC/Bf42 was defending a CP with a group of teammates against a large attacking force, frantically calling air support, mining tanks, chasing down infantry, explosions going around, but ive never had that experience in BF2, because noone cares to defend a CP or to even send a large force to attack one.

-vehicle maps rarely fully cater to vehicles in full.
maybe its due to taking advantage of the "advanced" bf2 undergrowth/overgrowth system, but the maps that seemingly are supposed to be vehicle oriented are quite annoying for vehicles themselves. think of the great vehicle maps of BF42 or DC. they were plain, flattish maps with large fields of fire, only trees and buildings were around the CPs. i found that to be the perfect setup. Leave all the space between CPs flat and plainish, to make helicopter strafing runs more formidable, tank battles more intense, and to encourage convoys. Dont worry about that making the map boring for infantry. thats what all the vehicles available are for, and also infantry will have their fun defending CPs. by making the Cps themselves complex, with buildings and shrubbery all around, this makes it ideal and greatly fun for infantry to defend, and play cat and mouse with tanks. the maps in BF2 are too cluttered, making half the time in a tank spent gingerly navigating a road, and making micro turns, reversing, etc.

these are my main issues, and i know its long but i wanted to explain my points fully. if i think of more, or if i get good suggestions from you folks ill add to it. im not saying to make BF2 exactly like DC or BF42, for there are mods already at work at that, but i believe that these are core, key ideas to keep in mind when making any map for this type of game, and they will improve the quality of gameplay expierenced, and maybe actually get people to play vehicle maps.

I like the maps, but I do agree. A straight up infantry or straight up vehicle, or even a straight up air power map would rock. Like karkand, the tanks are mass raping machines of doom if you can't bring em down fast, and inside the constant beeping drives you insane. I remember playing Coral Sea in 42 alot, pure dog fighting with a few spawn campers sniping. A wide open map to learn tank vs tank engagements at range would rock. Who doesn;t think it couldn;t be cool to have convys of tanks engaging each other? Good points, too bad my crappy processor can;t handle the editor or I'd be making some of these real =(

ditto, Im the same way, I used to love the el alameins, eastings, and such, and lol even I thought gazaala was cool sometimes. But now I like the urban maps. Completely agree with you, and I think a lot of other people do too.

And thanks, I now know why the big maps arent fun anymore. Fricken fushe pass has an outpost every 100 ft down a main road. El alamien was fun cause it only had what like 4 outposts? mmm, those were the days.

            .

            Charlesbian - great post.

...however, you have to keep it good for the infantry grunts.

I love the planes and chopper-whoring/point farming, but some maps (Fu-Shee - Zatar) it is badass to have a squad of rocket and repair folks ground pounding.

...even we have coined the term "anti-chopper-whore" to that player that continually brings down a full Blackhawk through whatever means available...

yeah the main problem is that 42' was all about vehicles, now its the other way arround, i think Dice made an excellent job about Infantry combat, but i was also hopping for maybe a Battle of 73' easting type map, just pure MBT's, LAV, with a lot of dust and huge space to kick some tank asses but it didnt happened at all

i agree with one point you make, charlesbian: there are too many cp's. i like the size of the maps, but would prefer fewer points spread out over it. as it is, it does seem like sometimes youre engaged less in actual combat than in a flag-capping excercise.

excellent points, and i'll hafta agree that there are too many CPs per map. its incredibly frustrating when my team and i have an all-out battle with the enemy over a CP and emerging victorious, only to discover that CPs on the other side of the freakin map have been overrun.

The main point I agree with is too many CP's. There are way to many on most maps which just spreads the players out more thinly across the maps.

I used to play the mod POE for BF:V which always favoured maps with say 3 or 4 CP's and these maps work out so much better because every flag has an almost constant battle going on at it. I think the BF2 maps themselves are fine from a design point of view they just need to reduce the CP's

Its funny but I played on a server a while back which had a 64 player count on the 16 player size maps and actually this gave a far better game and seemed to capture more of the old BF flavour. It was very intense which can not always be said for 64 players on on the 64 player map sizes.
I wish more server admins would configure servers like this as that particular one went AWOL.

I have also played ona 64 player server that was playing a 16 player map and man that was really, really HECTIC, it was just awesome. So yes i agree, reduce the control points.

Charlesbian you make some very good points and if I could just add one myself I’d say that quite a few maps have main bases which are unnecessarily capture-able (eg Songhua, Dragon Valley, Kubra). Because these bases are out of the way no-one bothers to stay back and defend them, it’s too boring, so a squad in a chopper or scout car can easily nip in and take the base and then the game turns into a bit of a scramble with the other team trying to get that flag back whilst holding some sort of front line on the other side of the map.

As to why there are so many maps in the game where the points in this thread are a problem, well my theory is that these maps weren’t designed to be played in conquest mode. I suspect that these maps were meant to be played primarily in the Supply Line mode that got cut late on in the game’s development. If you think about it, in this mode most of the problems mentioned in this thread wouldn’t arise at all as nearly all the action would centre around the 2 flags on the front line, hence no flag hopping and you’d find large columns of armour concentrated on one area. In fact the large number of flags would actually be a good thing.

I’m sure that if this got implemented in the next patch then the game and certain maps in particular would be much better.

i agree with the too many cps too. nothing worse than spawning at a cp and hoping to defend it and only to be sitting there for 10 minutes with no action. i think some of the maps are too big too. too much space between cps. by the time you get to a cp to defend or attack, its too late because its taken over by the time you get there.
