    Getting above 4xAA

    Hey,

How do you get anything above 4x AA in BF2? I have a 6800 GT and the in-game options only allow up to 4x AA. Any suggestionso?

    Thanks.

If you wish to above the standard anti aliasing settings offered to you in Battlefield 2, you must open the control panel for your display card and change it there.
Change it from "Application Preference" to whatever setting you want, please note that you will only be offered settings that your card supports and higher settings than 4x will severely impact the performance of the game playing experience.

4x is the most you should apply with a 6600GT anyway IMO.

If you think your computer can handle it... which proberbly wont unless you got dual 7800gtx, you can download a program called nHancer from guru3d, which is basically a much better version of that applications setting tab in NVidia control panel.

You can force it to run at 8x AA super sampling, or maybe ever 16x combined, which is basically 4xAA multi-sampling + 4xAA super sampling.

Of course I fully expect you to give up after you try because your card cant run that, not many can.

Can your eye tell a difference though once you get passed 4x AA?

youre not running this game with 4xAA on a 6800gt. unless its on 1024x768.

Yeah man I can't even run at 1024x768 without slowdown on my rig with 2xAA on. This game needs to be patched to run correctly, it should be running much faster on my rig and other people have been complaining about the bad performance of this game on high end rigs.

Uh, before I got my computer i was playing on a P4 3.4, 512 ram, Go5700 laptop, that ran with 4xAA fine. A 6800GT should be able to.

the bueaty of the 7800gtx is its extra pipelines,(its basically a more efficient 6800ultra with extra pipes and AA modes, the fact it was released to coincide with BF2 is no coincidence) a 8xs AA (supersampling mode), the difference between 4xAA and normal 8xAA at high res (1280x1024) or above is minimal, however 8xs AA actually Anti Alialises the full scene (ie: it applies AA to the full polygons rather than just the edges, unlike 8xAA ) this basically means things like wires, or wire fences look a lot cleaner, as normal 8xAA will only AA the edge of the fence it makes the middle of the fence look blocky..these settings are standard on the 7800gtx driver settings, however i would not try to set your driver to these settings on your 6800gt...as youll be heading into chug chug mode

see my specs below, im able to run at maximum settings,(1280x1024 max my tft allows :hmm: ) with 8xs AA and 16AF on 64 player servers with no slowdown, (only a few skips when the map loads, altho this is more server side than client as players connect..) fraps reports an average of 62fps

however i recomend you set your res to 1280x1024 (use commandline) and apply 6x AA and 8xAF for best performance/quality ratio, turning down dynamic lighting and shadows will help, also geometry set to medium might help, you might also consider setting your driver to "performance mode" as its set to "quality" as standard, theres no point in it looking good if it crawls.. :p

as for needing a 7800gtx sli setup to run at max settings, i think not, if i feel the need for more gfx power ill get one, but atm it looks as tho ill be upgrading my cpu well before i need another 7800gtx card, but as i hinted at earlier, this card was made for bf2....seamless

Actually I currently play at 1280 x 1024 with 4x AA quite easily, I was just wondering how to do it since it's not listed in any in game settings for me. I'm going to try and change it in nvidia's settings, thanks.

Ok, only ATi cards can run on 6xAA (exception, 780GTX i think) from the options panel of BF2, i dunno about the control center thingy for Nvidia, i run 1280x960 with 6xAA with all settings on high, including dynamic shadows and lighting and all stuff like that. And for jmuduke, i have no idea why you have so bad performance. I used to have horrible performance when i had patch 1.01, after reinstalling the game, it ran fine, no lag, higher fps, and i have no idea about 1.02,cause i'm on vacation in China, never had a chance to install, left the same day it came out. Does anybody still use version 1.00 at all? And to jmuduke, if you go into the ATi Catalyst COntrol Panel near where the clock is and the sound settings are on your comp, go inside and go to 3D, somewhere it'll have a slider for Performance, balanced, or quality, set it to balanced if it isn't already set to balanced, and try installing Cat 5.7 Drivers as well if you havn't already.

i run mine at 4x which is the max i see at 1280 1024. i dont see why you'd want to run it any higher, it's just excessive. sometimes for fun i turn it to 2x so i can encode a dvd in the background.

ok so its overkill, you really dont need more than 4x AA at high res (above 1280x1024) but if you can...why not? thats what ya pay for right

altho the card could make a great heater for the winter months tho, as it gets real hot, i had to use water cooling for my cpu as the card heats the inside of the pc case, making the ambient temp inside the case around 40-45c after a few hours of full load. which means ocing a cpu in those conditions almost impossible with a stock HSF, altho to be honest i have only 2x 120mm air fans (i like quietness)

                          also nice system skunk-dog
