Overclocking a AMD 3700???

im thinking of buying either a amd 3800+ or a 3700+

i know the 3800 is faster at stock speeds

but the 3700 has a 1mb l2 cache
so heres my plan

amd athlon 3700 2.2ghz 1024kb l2 cache
overclock it to 2.4ghz

and so it would become a 4000+

i have never tried overclocking ive always kept my processors at stock speeds how difficult is it to overclock and would 2.2-2.4 be possible with a san diego core and can you explain how to do this (if it is possible)

or should i forget about this and get a 3800+

2.4Ghz is entirely feasible with a 3700 SD, probably with stock voltage/cooling.

It's actually not difficult to overclock and you stand very little chance of actually breaking anything unless you start applying ridculous amounts of voltage to the chip. This link has all the information you'll need. Remember to always test your stabilty with memtest and/or prime95 to ensure your overclock is stable.

would a 450 watt psu and 1gb of pc3200 ram be good

i might go for a 3800+ depends on the money/time i have


im not going to go for a 4000+ because its overpriced for the performance difference it gives between it and the 3800

He wants the 1MB L2 Cache, I believe the 3800 only has a 512mb L2 Cache.

I would say that is a very good and safe route to go. I might recommend a after-market CPU cooler though to keep the temps down safely.

yeah 2.2 to 2.4 overclock is VERY easy... i have a 3500+ winnie and i set my fsb to 240x10, 4xHT, 6:5 ram divider and its perfect, 2.4 ghz and the ram stays at the stock speeds :)

afaik the 3700 is socket 754 and the 3800 is socket 939. meaning they would not both fit in the same board.

This is important for upgrading. Socket 754 will be discontinued by AMD pretty soon, and after that its socket 939 exclusively.

I know that :p, I'm just making sure that the original poster knows that the 2 processors he mentioned are for different board types. :)
