The BF2 Cobra

Well,

I'm going to start out to say i'm taking a vacation in hawaii, and am staying at a hotel right along WiKiKi beach, right next to and along the historic WWII hotel refered to as the "Pink Hotel," although the name of it has just slipped my tounge.

Anyway, I was visiting a WWII/Vietnam war museaum and on display, a full sized, 100% operational cobra helicopter, just as seen in Battlefield 2. Now, the paint job was a little different, all brown, but I got to say, in the game the heli is the EXACT same size as in real life. Meaning if a soldier walks up to it in the game, that's actually where a soldier would be standing in real life, very acurate demension model in the game.

Quite a cool experience!

But, if the chinese didn't bomb our helicopter plants before we got involved in a major war, we wouldn't be using technology from the past to fight a war in the future.

Hopefully we will be able to repair our factories and start putting out some Apaches?

Hopefully we can find off other attacks, so we won't need to bust out a Sherman Tank!

Actually the cobra in BF2 is a futuristic helicopter. The current cobra used in the USMC today is the AH-1W Supercobra which has a two bladed rotor. The one in BF2 is an AH-1Z. Both are very similar, but the Zulu has a four bladed rotor. I'm not sure if any AH-1Z's are out in the fleet currently.
The cobra is a formidable attack helicopter. I actually got to fly front seat in a Cobra on Christmas day when I was in Kuwait. That was when I was part of the 11th MEU Air Combat Element (ACE) The squadron was HMM 166, combined with HMLA 167, and HMH 361. We were aboard the USS Essex for that wespac too hehe. Another interesting fact about the cobra is that the gunner can fly the aircraft from the front seat (if the pilot was ever incapacitated or killed) The controls are a little weird from the front though.

Like people above have said, the cobra in BF2 is not the same helicopter that was in Vietnam. It has undergone lots of advancements and modifications and the SuperCobra (the new name) is the helicopter of choice for the marine corps. The Cobra showed in Vietnam that it was the perfect helicopter for what the Marines needed, and the tactics that the Cobra use are adapted well to its capabilities and the marines' mission.

Apaches are also very capable helicopters, but they were intended for a different mission then the Cobra. The Cobra is better suited to providing support and cover for infantry, other ground forces and helicopters inserting troops, and the Apache was designed to basically be an airborne tank, a major force on its own, capable of engaging enemy armor and other forces independently of other units, and its favorite tactic is to hide behind cover in wait for an enemy formation, and then a few of them just pop straight up and unleash on them. This is all because the Apache was designed with a massive tank war on European terrain between NATO and the USSR in mind.

The Super Cobra is the best helicopter for BF2's style of gameplay, and since the Cobra is what the USMC uses and the USMC is the representing force for the US, the Apache wouldn't make sense in the context of the game.

The Cobra in BF2 is neither an AH-1W or an AH-1Z. It is a bastardized version of both. It does have the 4 bladed main and tail rotors and some extra fins on the tail of the AH-1Z. However it has the weapon wings that an AH-1W has.

My guess on the reasons for this is that no other helicopter in the game has a 2 bladed rotors so they could reduce what they have to model by just sticking a 4 bladed rotor on it. The wings on the AH-1Z have wing tip mounts that could hold anti aircraft missles such as the Stinger and Sidewinder. No other helicopter in the game has this capability so it was obviously dropped as a balancing issue.

Deliveries of the AH-1Z will begin in 2005 and are to run until 2013. Initial Operational Capability is scheduled for FY 2006.
