You do get an unlock at Sergeant. Just look at BF2S.com, and despite the stats being somewhat outdated, you can still see a sergeant with three unlocks.

I thought unlocks were based on points not rank ? 1st unlock @ 1,000 pts, 2nd unlock @ 10,000 pts.... ?!?!?!

well when u hit a certain amount of points, u rank up.
oh and the 2nd unlock is at 10,500
