"Un-mute" your microphones, please...

Don't know if this is happening to everyone, I suspect it is, since most ppl it's very difficult to hear them, but when I join a server, my mic get's muted.

Once loaded, you should Alt-Tab, then press the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt, bottom left of kbd) and press R and type 'sndvol32' in the "Run" box. If the mouse is not working here, you just keep pressing the Tab key 'til I get to the 'Mute' checkbox and press the Spacebar to uncheck the 'Mute' checkbox. Alt-Tab again to return to BF2, and now you can talk to your squad members.

I'm not sure that you have this quite right.

By clicking the "unmute" what this actually does is unmutes the playback of the mic, so that you can hear yourself.

This is purely only playback, it doesnt matter if this is muted or not, the microphone will still be recording. Having it unmuted just means you can hear yourself breath and so on, and is a usually a good source of feedback.

Great info again Doover, I'd noticed most who did talk did sound very distant, volume was too low to really make out what they were saying most of the time. Thought perhaps their mic was muted but sound card was still letting through just a teensy bit of sound... which is why I'd posted this thread in the first place.

One of the reasons I might give up on this game is that it's extremely frustrating to be fighting with a squad and/or team that won't communicate. But when you do find team members you can communicate with (extremely rare), then the game is great fun. Unfortunately, too few ppl out there to "work" with.

Hope to find you on the battlefield, I'm quite certain you're a team player.

I don't think this is the issue with many people. I am having the problem in different servers. The mic always works for me but it seems that in many servers it will not work properly. I will be on one server and speaking with everyone fine. Then get out of that server and go to another and it doesn't work. It shows that VOIP is enabled and everyone on the team is enabled but it just doesn't seem to work. I can see that my green mic comes on but the other people in the squad do not see my name come up or hear me. When they try to speak, the same thing happens. I have even encountered that a few people could talk to eachother in the squad and see that the other person is talking but the other 3 people could not see that the person was talking or hear them. Seems to be a bug that needs to be addressed.
