Setting up a BF2 Sever

First off, I love the site...been coming here for awhile...just decided to join. :)

Ok, so here is the question since I can't seem to come up with anything yet...

I have an extra machine at home...don't know the exact specs, but should run a 16 player server. I also have a cable connection and a Linksys router, so I think that I am good to go on that.

So where do I start? I don't have the slightest idea on what to do. I thought about poping the BF2 cd in the soon to be sever, but its a DVDCD and no DVD reader (first wall to run into ).

If anyone can help out, point me to a good article or talk me out of it, please do so.

If you still want to start a dedicated server... download the Win32 Server load it on the dedicated machine. You don't need BF2 loaded on that machine either.

I have it done this and it works fine. My only problem is that I can't join the game in BF2 the connection fails. I think it's a router setting issue. Hopefully you'll have more luck.

I agree with Munson on this one, unless you decide to run a very small server. Cable connections typically do not have enough bandwdith (ie upload) to support many players. You can read in other posts where people have broken down the bandwidth this game consumes, and it's freakin enormous. If your determined to do it; here you go:

1) Get the dedicated server files from the ea site. I think its http://battlefield2.ea.com
2) Read the sticky in the forums about which ports must be enabled on your router
3) Configure all your server files to the appropriate settings (ie .con files you see mentioned in these forums)
4) Start your server and have fun

You do not need a copy of the game to install the dedicated server files, so don't worry about that.

Upload Speed: 359 kbps (44.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

And it would really kill it if I tried to get on. Dang it.
