not just poor performance i would call it shity

ok had bf2 + patch 1.02 installed and workin fine but my win install was getting old so i decided to reinstall winxp and at the same time bf2 + patch 1.02 and now the game is unplayable not slower but unplayable i get sound stutter and laging in sp and mp even if my ping is 30 (cable 6.5mb/900kb)i have a radeon 9800pro with cat5.6 ,same as before, the latest nforce driver ,again the same as i had before and the latest sound card driver from aopen ,not the same as before i had an older version before but i upgraded to those as i tought it might be the cause i also have winxp +sp2 as before since i reinstalled xp all i installed with it is firefox 1.0.6 wich i had before ,no antivrus or firewall or ad-aware stuff nothing ,just to give you an idea i get from 3 to 15 fps depending if i am looking at wall but i even get lag when looking at wall ,my catalyst driver are set to performance and not quality so i really dont know what is wrong

here are the full spec

athlon xp2400
1gig pc3200
radeon 9800pro
aopen sound card
asus a7n8x mobo
and around 20gig left of freespace on the bf2 hdd

edit the ingame graphic setting are the same as the one i was using when the game was running fine

go into bios and turn fast writes to disable and see if this helps :|:

Could there be something else running in the background such as Windows Update? Have you checked in device manager to ensure there are no incorrectly installed devices etc?

Try uninstalling the drivers and use a driver clean up program to get rid of any left over files and reinstall them.

Increase page file size... Windows sets max paging file to 1536 Mb when using 1 gig of ram. BF2 can take up to 1,6 Gb memory. When Windows runs out of memory, this stuttering/lag happens, you can notice that hdd runs like crazy when these stutters appear...

I increased paging file to 2560 Mb and it helped a lot.

Are you sure u didn't remove any other updates/linked programes to that file , since winX was old maybe some other files was overited in the same programme and may cause some errers , try going in windows update and cheking your bf2 settings if they might have bean changed after reinstal with a new winx.

no there is nothing running in the background aside from the usual +or- 27 background process

i did a reinstallation of the driver with clean up but it did not change anything

i agree but anyway my paging file is 4096mb so this is not the problem

the install is a full format and all winupdate have been done i have none left to dl
as for the BF2 setting they are the same as before a mix of high and middle with a screen res of 800x600 75hz wich is exactly the same as it was before the reinstall

as for this comment if you meant that some of the file in the bf2 installation where from the old install it cant its a new install on a formated hdd as is the winxp install and it was a full format not a quick one

Switch AGP Aperture size to 256 MB in your pc's bios. Solved the performance problems (stuttering when moving horizontally) completely for me.

size is allready set to 512 anyway i found the problem and it seem to be a recurent one with user that have nforce2 and maybe 3 mobo ,the gart driver for the agp port did not install so i just had to reinstall it wich made my radeon run in agp 8x instead of agp off

Oh FYI, you should decrease you pagefile to 2560, as your pagefile should NEVER be more then 2.5 times your physical memory, it will actually decrease performance.

Of course hdd is slower, but things get a lot worse when Windows runs out of memory completely. So having larger swap file helps. Best thing to do is to buy more memory.

Another option is to fine tune windows. After a fresh installation there are so many parts of Windows that are running which dont need to be, most of these can be controlled via "services.msc" found under admin tools. There are a few guides on the net but there is one I cant find which was very good. Im sure it was called Black Widow or something similar.
