Actually this made me laugh as I often actually do this in front of friendlies who I can see look intent on heading for my mines. Of course the result is they run you over and TK themselves. At least you get to punish them back though

Well I'm not the greatest engineer and honestly I don't like the class much but I can tell you how I plant mines. Ok so I'm trying to defend a flag so what I do it find the most used route to the flag. I put one mine on the left side of the road then run about 15 or 20 meters and put one the right then I run again and put one on the left side. I use the last to on one of the other roads using the same method. This usually give plenty of room for teammates that aren't completely retarded to get through the mines with out to much hassle. And you're right, you can put a mine in the middle of no where and some idiot team mate would run over it and punish you.

No your exactly right, and that is a pretty sound stradegy but my point is that unless you have more visuals or added sound effects to warn you of friendly mines then placement will continue to be meaningless. It does not matter if your intent is to impede enemy movement or defend a flag, placement means nothing if your dealing with people on your team that are incapable of paying attention. The warning system needs to be refined. That's the bottom line and the point of this topic. Polish up the warning system so that it's easier for players to spot and avoid friendly mines and everyone will be happy.

testingtesting123 is absolutely right. Here is how you use mines to stop the enemy, not get TKs, and not piss off your teammates.

          1) See an enemy vehicle.
          2) Run up to it.
          3) Drop a mine in its path.
          4) Get a kill and repeat.

You don't leave them all over the map where they'll be in everyone's way and slow down your teams best flag cappers as they need to delicately maneuver around them. You don't use mines as you would in real life, you use them as you should in Battlefield.

Punishing for accidental TKs is lame and wrong, but I certainly don't have any sympathy for engineers that fall to it.

EA/Dice really can't do much for people with ADD, so we are always going to have idiots run over mines no matter how much you warn them, tell them and or show them. What were we talking about again? Oh yes mines....

Speaking from personal expirence, if AT mines showed up on the minimap as a bright orange dot, they would be a lot easier to navigate through. I constantly use my MM to look out for the idiots that like to stand behind or infront of my vehicle, doing the same with mines would be golden me thinks.

            Edit:

No, he/she is far from right, but I was staying out of it because its already a heated argument. But let me just add something to your statement: that is by far the worst suggestion ever. How this situation turns out 99% of the time:

You see incoming vehicle. You attempt an olympic discus throw of the AT mine. Incoming vehicle then lays a lot of lead into you and drives around the mine you tossed. Now you have this mine out in the middle of flow, a teammate spots that vehicle and a friendly tank comes rushing in to get that vehicle. Meanwhile you respawn and promptly gunned down again because you have a shotgun that shoots beanbags at anything over 5 feet from you. Your friendly tank now find sthe mine you recklessly tossed and gets blown up. Point is lost, and you now most like are responsible for a TK, losing the point, and possibly a step closer to a kick/ban.

Great plan. And you wonder while people punish for AT mines....

              No its more like this:

              1) See an enemy vehicle.
              2) Run up to it.
              3) Get pwnd by the enemy

I like this one better though:

              1) See an enemy vehicle
              2) Run up to it
              3) Drop a mine in its path
              4) Friendly gets in vehicle, drives off, goes boom
              5) You get punished.

Now the above is assuming that the vehicle is empty.
Lets change the scenerio to a occupied vehicle that's in enemy control.

              1) See an enemy vehicle.
              2) Run up to it.
              3) Enemy spots you before you have a chance to fart, and boom... your dead
              4) Respawn, start over.

              OR

              1) See an enemy vehicle
              2) Run up to it.
              3) Put a mine in it's path
              4) Enemy drives in opposite direction of your mine... a friendly heads in the mines path and goes boom, you get punished.

If you want to focus on killing vehicles, play AT. Engineers fix vehicles and kill them when they roll up to a flag (via the aforementioned method).

I also never said it was safe or especially effective, just that you won't get TKs or piss off your teammates.

So you place your mine’s so that the enemy can’t get in, so how are your team mates going to get out?

I can’t see the point in that, and it is obvious that you are doing something wrong.

I don't plant them right on the road you see ... then they just get driven around.

Enemy base, plant them on a ridge (gulf of oman and the bottom right hand US base is prime for this as they go out the west route to the hotel all the time ... mined = nasty), and also in grass which makes them next to impossible to spot.

But when the base is taken .. a tank spawns and works in reverse. = tk's. This is the single most annoying thing about playing an engineer ... and why I don't anymore. Before you say deactivate the mines when the base is taken ... what if you are half way accross the map?

First of all, I NEVER EVER totally mine a CP with no way out for my own team. Mines are the only way to keep a tank or a apc out of a recently won CP with any sure chance of success. It makes them take the CP with infantry which is ten times easier to deal with.

Often time I will mine the bridge to a CP and leave the other way unmined but be there to drop mines if I see enemy vehicles coming directly for it. Not only do I say in chat WATCH FOR MY MINES or DONT RUN OVER THE MINES ON BRIDGE where it cant be missed but I have been RUN OVER by teammates too STUPID to know that I was standing IN FRONT OF THE MINES telling them in chat NOT TO RUN OVER MY MINES and shaking my characters head "no" and they run me over, kill me, and then get blown up by the mines and punish me for it.

They simply could have gone the other way out but they dont give a crap and they dont fight for the team, they fight for themselves. All they care about is if they personally get a high score is all it really amounts to, and if they cant head down the road to cap another flag then YOU must be playing the game wrong.

I'm not playing the game wrong, I'm a natural defensive player that likes to defend bases once they are capped. I get less points that way but the flag stays with our side.

I say EA/Dice should stop punishes for running over mines. 9 times out of 10 is some lamerz that wants a big score for himself and doesnt understand that a flag once capped needs to stay capped. All everyone wants to do is run around and cap flags in choppers and tanks becuase thats how they get big points. I play for my team instead.

Stupidity can only be fixed with genocide, unfortunately the lowest form of intelligence will then inherit stupidity and then also be destroyed. Most of us humans would be gone first.

Mines killing teammates is a great issue to me as Engineer is my second most used class. Going back to the beginning of this topic was a simple fix of disabling friendlies triggering mines, wherein GlassEye stated that the map would then become a giant mine field.

An extra proposal to this dilemma is that an engineer only gets three mines, not unlike the sniper getting two claymores. Not only do they only have three max, they can only have three mines deployed.

As it is now, after dropping all five of his mines, had none been detonated, dropping a sixth mine would make the first vanish, allowing only five from each player at a time. By dropping the maximum stock held and dropped, the engineer will really only be useful for blocking one wide road or bridge at a time. Even with five, one would usually have to put three or four mines across a road to make sure the enemy cannot squeeze by.

While five mines at a time, deployed by a class that has absolutely no way to kill a person or vehicle, unless that person is within fiftyy meters or the vehicle moves over their explosives, doesn't seem like something most people would opt for in place of a far better killing class, lowering the maximum to two or three would quell any nay-sayers that claim making friendlies bypass mines would be bad.

Fix to satisfy everybody except everybody else:
                                -Disable friendlys triggering mines.
-Lower maximum mines deployed to 3.
