I have had an FPS ranging between 20-100 in BF2 the last weeks after it was released. Sometimes it runs very smooth, and other times it is just awful to play. I have mixed with almost everything that can be adjusted and it seems like the problem is deeper than that. I have changed AGP agerpature size, changed D3D settings, defragged the drive and so on. Sometimes, when the game runs at FPS 50+ its a joy to play. But since the game is so good, it bugs me when it gets down to 20 fps again. And beleive me, I have played with 20 fps on 16-player servers so it has nothing to do with the amount of players and so on. I have 3 ghz, 1000 memory, 120 hdd and a Geforce 6600 GT 256 mb. The average person would consider that quite a nice computer, but wouldnt dream of it getting as low as 20 FPS. Do you have any suggestions on what to do becasue this drives me insane. Will it be fixed in the patch, cause something is obviously wrong. I think I recall that the demo was a little bit smoother when I played that.

You need to turn your in-game settings down. Dynamic lighting and Dynamic shadows are especially tough on mid-and low end video cards. The 6600GT is a mid-range card, so you may have to mix that, and also make sure in your Nvidia control panel that Anti-Alasing is off. I have heard something about the new drivers having them on by default.Comment

You need more memory, BF2 uses 1,2 - 1,7 Gigabytes when using high settings. Having a large page file helps too, but best thing to do is buy more memory.

Similar computer here... AMD 2500+, 2GB RAM, 6600GT 128 AGPx8.
1024x768x100hz. Settings medium except: Shadows off, Lighting & Dynamic Lighting low and 2xAA. 25-90 FPS... Averages 30-40. Flying, I'll get average 50+.
Anti aliasing has quite a performance hit, but the game looks so much better with it on, I compromised over some other settings.
Try the IGN BF2 Tweak Guide:
Based on the guide above, my control panel settings are as so:

Also, it may not be your graphics card which is giving you trouble. Experiment with the game sound settings, and also try turning off, or setting to basic your sound hardware acceleration in windows. I suffered with stuttering which disappeared when I turned my sound (SBLive! 5.1) hardware acceleration down to basic.
I'd also suggest buying another 512mb RAM.
Waiting for delivery of a MSI sckt 939 Neo-F mobo and an AMD 64 3200+ so will be interesting to see if there's much of a performance improvement.Comment

If you're running xfire, turn it off! I used to run xfire while I played, but since I've been turning it off while playing, I get an extra 30-40 FPS.Comment

You're probably correct. 2GB RAM isn't a requirement. I noticed no performance increase when I upgraded from 1.5 to 2GB.. However I did notice a significant performance increase when I upgraded from 1 to 1.5GB...Originally posted by KingOfKhaos
Many more people (Just do a search on the forum) have reported the same performance increase.
It seems with BF2 at least, what works for one, might not work for others, but as 512mb RAM is probably the cheapest "bang for buck" upgrade one can make to a PC, it won't do the guy any harm if he follows the advice.Comment
