What is the squad system like??

I've never played BF2, but I'm buying it soon. I've heard that it has a new squad based system which groups players together and gives them a leader who reports to a commander. I remember BF1 was a bit of a free for all with little teamwork.

Can someone explain what this system is like, if it works and do people work as a team in BF2. Thanks. :)

yeah.. more teammwork oriented, but not always the case, fun too have different squads w/ ppl following u around and takin your orders if you are a squad leader.. healing eachother is cool too.
    play the demo from EA...

If you can find or make a squad that is able to stick together and follow orders, its great.

As has been pointed out here befor, on a 32-player server, if you have one side with 2 squads working together and no squads on the others side then it's game over.

In saying that, when you jpoin a server to find there there are already 4 squads created, you may have to shuffle between all of them to find the one worth sticking with. IMHO, the most important factor is having a squad leader who doesn't travel in 2-seater vechcles. When you die, you can choose to spawn on your leader and not a flag, but not if he's in transport and there's not enough room for you to join him.

Squad leaders who play sniper are worthless (also IMHO).

You can see what class the other squad members have choosen so remember to pick one with a medic :)

VOIP will be hard to find unless you find a squad named VOIP or Teamwork...

The commander gives orders which the squadleaders can acknowledge or dismiss. The commander can also place artillery, resupply boxes and UAV's (shows enemies on the minimap).

The squadlead can place his own orders independently from the commander and have those orders show up on the squadmembers HUD. He can also ask the commander directly for resupply etc. if he does the commander just have to right click and accept.

The squad members can also ask for the commanders abilities but only the squad leader will see/hear it.

The VOIP and orders work like a chain of command i.e. the commander talks/orders to the squad leaders who in turn talks/orders to the squad members.

The system can work but doesn't most of the time. In my opinion there's alot more teamplay in this game than most other games.

EDIT: oh yeah and as mentioned above the squad leader is a mobile spawn point. Your teammates and squad leader will also show up in your HUD when you're in range of them (makes it easier to keep the squad together.

BF2 gives you tools to work extremely well as a team, but not everyone uses them.

I love the squad system in BF2. It's one of the main reasons I play.

The squad system is the best thing that happened to online gaming in a long time. It can be hard to find a good squad (or make one yourself), but once you and your squaddies act together as a team, there's nothing stopping it. Try the demo, dude! You'll like it.
