2.9 athlon??? do you mean 2800+? if you bought your pc as a pre-build (like a dell or hp) post what the model number is and it would give a better idea of your spec's.
Any way you should be able to play it. i am playing it decently on a way slower machine than yours (athlon 2000+, 512mb ram, 9700pro). as long as your processor is over a 2000+ model you should be fine.
your system should have no problems running this game at decent settings (medium maybe a few on low). you could always get the demo and try it out (if you have a broadband connection). yes this game is worth getting on your system (even though there are still a lot of bugs in the game =[).
BF2 uses over 2GB's of RAM on high regardless of what people say. I upgraded to 2GB's of RAM and my system is what most would considered uber but before I did even I had to run on medium settings. 1GB will be good enough but 2GB's is recommended. Even though I do have the 2GB's of RAM I noticed my PF Usage is still over 1GB when the game is running, yet no stutter. I also looked at my PF Usage and it appears to have turned from 1000 something mb to 2048mbs that can be used.

ye but here is my case.
I had 1,5 gb ram 2 x 512 and 2 x 256 and it all work on 266 mhz. When i removed the two moduls 256 ram it worked on 400 mhz and the game run better then with 1,5.The speed of ram i also imortent.
my selfbuild plays medium briliantly with 1gb, and my other machine plays it smoothly with 1gb ram, id put 1gb of ram in and put a better processor in it.
