    Random Game Freezing

Been playing this game for over a month now, but in the last week, the game seems to completely freeze my computer. I can't alt-tab out, I can't hit ctrl-alt-delete, nothing works. I tried having task manager in my alternate monitor when playing a few times, and it froze my computer with CPU Usage only at low-80% (which is what it's at usually).

I used to be able to play all I wanted, with no problems, but now I can barely play in a game before it freezes. I can't connect the freeze to a certain instance, because it's seemingly random. I could by flying a plane, I could be sniping, I could even be staring at the ground.

I used to be able to play with no problem, but now I can't even play a full round.

I did the obvious and tried remembering what changes I made to my computer recently, and couldn't remember anything major. However, I did do a system restore back to 2 weeks ago, and that didn't help at all.

Here are my computer specs if it helps:
Operating System: (Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (5.1 - 2600))
    Uptime: (1h 3m 13s)
    Record: (1w 1d 2h 33m 7s set on Wed Jun 15 18:03:25 2005)
    Memory Usage: (Usage: 506/1023MB (49.46%)) (|||||||||||||||---------------)
Display: (ATI SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 XT 256mb Dual Monitor)
    Monitor(s): ((1) Dell E152FP 1024x768x32bpp - 75Hz. (2) Philips CM0200 15C 1024x768x32bpp - 60Hz.)
    CPU Info: (2 Intel Pentium IV @ 2989.54 MHz Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 3 (4% Load))
    Hard Disks: (Total/Free: 34.2/8.34GB, Total/Free space on: C: 34.2/8.34GB)
    Connection/Network: (#1 (Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection - Packet Scheduler Miniport (100Mb/s) 226.11MB In, 189.42MB Out))

    Thanks in advance!

What sound card and settings do you have? Sound cards have been causing a headache in this game.

Sound card hasn't changed at all. I'm using the onboard one that came with my computer, and it's been working fine for BF2 in the past month.

Sound: (SoundMAX Digital Audio) ¤ BW: (5.15) ¤ Conn: (Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection - Packet Scheduler Miniport @ 100.0 Mbps (Rec: 457.91MB Sent: 496.31MB))

By obvious I will assume you mean you have re-installed all your drivers, DX 9.0, and the game?

Also which drivers version are you running for your 9600XT? 5.7 is the latest driver from ATI.

Was running the drivers that came on the CD with the gfx card, >.<. Just tried updating to v5.7, and I'm getting:
"Setup failed to launch installation engine: Access is denied.""

And yeah, I uninstalled and reinstalled bf2 completely. I just find it totally odd that it's starting out of nowhere, when it worked fine earlier.

I'll probably try another system restore to an even EARLIER point if we can't figure out the problem. Appreciate you trying though, =)

The thing is, I used to play almost 24/7, now I'm lucky if I can play for an hour without my computer totally locking up.

I was planning on trying out for some competitive play (clans, etc.), but I can't if my game FREEZES.

Maybe it has something to do with your cooling system... maybe check ur fans, make sur ethey are working right... and if that doesnt work try a fresh install of the whole game... that always works!

Turns outmy only system restore point is 2 days ago, which won't help at all. I'm uninstalling SP2 right now (installed recently), but I'm pretty sure I began having troubles even before upgrading.

Worst comes to worst, I'll transfer important files to an alternate computer (or my iPod [20gb space!]), and format and start my computer fresh. It really has been begging for it, =P

You need to have an Administrator account to run installs that modify system files (such as ATI's drivers, and BF2).
